Foo - Clear liquid diet

I have to do a clear liquid diet tomorrow in preparation for a screening exam on Monday. The joys of turning 50. I am really bummed to discover that beer and wine are not considered clear liquids.

Vodka is clear.

Don't they give you that "super colon blow" stuff that cleans you out?

^^^ It is called Dulcolax tablets and Nulytely prep, and yes, I start that tomorrow. I decided to go out with a bang and had a chicken fajita pizza and an india pale ale for my last meal.

I've had to go through that too and its not so bad. Before you know it, you'll be done with the prep and in the exam room. The doctor gave me some "twilight" medication to sedate me but for some reason, I was fully conscious for the procedure. Apparently, I need more twilight drugs that most.

One suggestion. Get a package of baby wipes. What you don't use for cleaning up during the prep period, you can keep in a zip-loc bag. These can be used for quick, clean ups after riding your bike. :thumb:

Actually, I have to say that this prep has been remarkably drama-free. None of the conniptions that I had been led to expect after browsing the Net. I only had to drink half of the Nulytely to get satisfactory results. And as an upside, I discovered that plain peach jello does not taste half bad.

Actually, I had my first colonoscopy at 23. So this youngun is fully acquainted with the procedure and would like to thank modern science for developing all the sleepy-type drugs the nice doctor gives you. Also, phospho soda = draino for your guts. Just sayin'.

Had my first 'scope last summer at age 41 (family history of colon cancer). The prep wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared, and I was nighty-night for the whole procedure. However, I have a funny anecdote.

My prep kit came in 2 parts. The instructions said to drink the first half of the powder, wait an hour, then drink the 2nd half. I drank the first half (yuck). My wife wanted to be really nice to me so she started mixing the 2nd half in the kitchen while I sat in the living room waiting. Suddenly I heard a "thunk" and my wife yelled, "Oh s**t!" She'd spilled the powder down the drain. :( And it was about 20 minutes before the pharmacy closed for the night. My wife got in the car (**I** wasn't driving anywhere!) and rushed to the pharmacy, where they charged her $45 for a replacement kit.

When she got back I drank the rest and we kept the extra half.

The next morning I went in for the exam. The first thing the nurse asked me during intake was, "Did you drink all the prep?" "Yep!" I replied. "Oh," she said. "Most people only drink half."

Grrrrr.

Well, I have to say that in the big scheme of things, this was a piece of cake. Both the prep and the colonoscopy itself were remarkably easy and trouble-free. I had the Versed and Fentanyl sedation and I felt no pain and could watch everything on the monitor.

But the best part of all was stopping on the way home for a plate of cheese fries and a Diamond Knot Industrial IPA. I figured I should probably try to reload the GI system with toxins ASAP.

It's an annoyance and an inconvenience, but I suppose it's better than what could happen. ;)

I asked the GI doctor where the Old country Buffet was. He was NOT amused. I blame my poor humor on the sedatives.

A friend of mine doesn't react well to any kind of anesthesia. After his first colonoscopy he decided that the anesthesia was worse than the procedure. He now gets his annual colonoscopy done while completely awake.

That's bad.

Worse: he also has his endoscopies done without any drugs. :(

Had mine last November, and it really isn't that bad. I had a couple of tips from friends to help out, one of the most useful being to have LifeSavers around to take the awful cloying taste of the prep out of your mouth.

Had a couple of humorous moments. Mine took place in a large hospital where droves of people get this done every day at the same time. I had a maniacal urge to announce, "I know what is about to happen to all of YOU :p in the waiting room, but restrained myself. Then, the gown they gave me was way oversized and I had to literally hold it together to avoid mooning everyone in the place.

When they wheeled me in to the "station" for the procedure, the monitor was showing some disgusting stringy thing that looked like the worst diseased tissue. "Oh... that's just a towel, it's really magnified". The whole thing was over before I realized it, seems like a few seconds went by and I asked when they were going to start. "We're done!".

yes, not the most pleasant thing on earth, but not that bad at all, and well worth it for the health/peace of mind benefits. Just DO it!
