I have a set of 9sp Shimano barend shifters with issues. While in index mode, the rear shifter skips through the middle three gears. It feels like the notches (or whatever is inside there) are broken off. Is it possible to get a rebuild kit? It still works fine in friction mode , so I don't want to do any exploratory surgery until I have more info. Thanks

It's an easy construction: http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/EV/bikecomponents/SL/EV-SL-BS77-1664_v1_m56577569830628723.pdf
If you just remove the bolt, then slide the lever out, and check the #2 part for wear.. if it has broken parts, it's hard to repair it (but it can be done with epoxy, or lot's of other ideas even fabricating a mold to cast a new piece, but it's not a job for everyone) Safe thing is to replace that ring. Check the ratchet in the lever also.
You can take a look without risk, but it's annoying to remove the cable, and then install it again, and readjust the RD ..

I'd keep it in friction mode like a real man!

You should be able to easily see if the parts are worn.

But, as reptilezs says, it could very well be assembled wrong. Have you recently removed the shifters and reinstalled them? Unless you remove and then reinstall in same gear position, they can go together wrong and give you that symptom.
