Anyone watching? Anyone care? I'm pulling for the netherlands. I've always liked them as far back as back as Davids and Bergkamp before him. What about you guys?

There are two things I can't stand: people who are intolerant of other cultures and the Dutch.

Seriously, I'm going for them, too. I love how they've won all their games by 1. It seems obvious to favor Spain, since they took down Germany. Either way, it only takes one lucky play or call to win these games.

Did you see the pre-game show? It was almost as goofy as the Olympic ceremonies.

0-0 after 2 hours, the fans are falling asleep, what a perfect showcase for the World's most boring championship. Curling is more interesting...TdF and F1 are TiVo'ed, a least there's some good sports on today!

:) watching it now, right after formula 1...

Anyone else catch the Dutch blowing off the corner kick? Can you imagine a coach in the Superbowl deciding not to try for a touchdown because he didn't think a pass interference call on the other team was deserved?

The announcers were very cool about it, like it must happen all the time, though I did not see this in any other games this year. Is this common?

I would have been happy to see either team win, really. I was psyched to see these squads advance to the finals and give these countries a chance for victory.

Mr IGH - you don't get it, and it's as simple as that. this isn't the biggest sport in the world because people don't know how to enjoy themselves, so if you don't like it why not watch something else?

At least it didn't come down to penalty kicks this time! What was your favorite flop this year?

I haven't seen The A Team yet, but it hasn't been doing so well in theaters, so I'd better catch it before it's pulled.

I thought it would be close, since both teams play a similar game. Both are known for ball control and lots of short, confusing passing. However, I didn't think it would be close because both teams would play so poorly. Dutch especially had a few easy shots that they totally flubbed. The Germany/Uruguay game yesterday was a much better match (even with the rain).

I'm not overly surprised that today's game didn't match up to yesterday's. Whether it's a case of too many nerves or nobody wanting to be the one to screw up, the final is often a rather drab affair. Kinda like how the NFL conference finals are often better games than the SuperBowl.

I was rootin' for Holland, but have to admit that the better team won in the end. And thank doG we avoided penalties.

It's a rule of the Intrawebs. Any thread about football must include at least one post, usually the third or fourth, stating that the game is boring. People who have no interest in football are obliged to say so at every opportunity.

the game was anticlimactic. both teams packed the midfield and it resulted in a boring
as hell match. neither team got a chance to really show their wares. now uruguay...
that was a fun team to watch. too bad it wasn't uruguay vs netherlands in the final
cause that woulda been a hoot.

I concur. The last 30 minutes of the game were not worth watching so I took a nap and woke up to see the Spaniards cheering. I was rooting for Uruguay to be of the final two. Maybe next time?

The entire championship was anti-climatic. New WC record, Spain is the first winner to only score 8 goals total to win, perfect for this WC...Isn't it time to do something about off-sides and all the flopping, what's with the clock running while the flopper lays on the field acting, the ref has a clock in his pocket, who knows how much time is left...add instant replay too...It's not a Championship, it's a Lottery....

For someone who hates soccer/futball, you sure seem to watch a lot of it.

Personally, I found much of the tournament a lot of fun to watch. The finals were poor because of the violent play.

Didn't watch any of it, I read about it in the paper. I keep up on it so I can converse with all the Euro-types in our office.

2 hours, no score, all the offsides call preventing anything interesting from happening (easy for the ref to rig). Holland's down one guy from the weird red card rule, they had one less player than Spain, no sub after red card, how silly, the ref can throw the game. A bad call on penalty kick (how could they miss that!), no replay, results in the winning goal with one minute left after all the silly flopping and ref's pocket watch allowing him to end the game when he wants too. It's a Lottery....

<Shrug> Still sounds like you're investing a lot of time and energy following a sport you claim to hate. I can't be bothered with basketball, but I know there are people who enjoy it. I don't feel the need to read newspaper reports just so I can log onto the Internet and tell them how boring the game is. Still, whatever makes your tail wag.

The only reason the 3rd World likes soccer is that they have a chance to win the lotto, sort of, opps, never mind, Ghana.

Compare the average US High School's soccer facilities and rescources to the Ghana National Team's. US Soccer fans should be ashamed...Maybe that's why they call it football, trying to trick us into watching it....

Perhaps you should be ashamed. Rather presumptuous that the US has some claim to being able to win at any/all sports.

We spend more on high school soccer than Ghana spends on schools, it's a joke on US Soccer fans :p

It isn't a joke at all. You reap what you sow. In most parts of the world soccer is part of the culture. Here, it is just another sport. Countries that advance far into the tournament typically identify good junior players at the junior high school age bracket and develop them from there--meaning the national soccer federation pays for training/schooling at that age and beyond. Ghana probably does this as well. The USA doesn't do it, and therefore is behind the curve in player development for the men.

You're right, we give out participation trophies to last place teams, coddle the best players with University scholarships, best facilities in the world, and we get a WC team that thinks showing up to play and making ESPN commercials is all they need to do. We're reaping alright.

LOL, I tried, fell asleep after 15 minutes, woke up 2 hours later, the score was still 0-0, didn't miss anything except all the flopping and offsides calls....

You've refuted them so well...Face it, USSoccer is a bunch of losers and the WC has serious issues with impartial refs and momentum stopping rules. Reminds me of the UN.

You are correct, esp the part about convicted felons, the number of gang related pro atheletes is epidemic. Gangs have ties to organized crime, organized crime is involved in illegal gambling, makes me wonder how much point shaving goes on. Brett Farve has a history of point shaving interceptions late in the game...Did you know why some pro basketball players wear those sleeves...they have to cover up gang related tattoos....

It need to be eliminated or modified, it's the main reason soccer sucks.

You've obviously never played the game. It keeps the game a contest of skill. If you want soccer with no offsides, there's indoor soccer. It's fast and fun, and probably more to your liking - but a completely different game.
