Texas - Bike Racks

Neither of my cars allow use of trunk mounted racks. One car is a convertible and the other won't work with a roof rack. I used e-trailer (they advertise on the forum) to order a hitch for my car and a Swagman rack. The price was great. The service was great. Received the rack and hitch promptly.

I went to the U-Haul center on Westheimer in Houston. They refused to install my hitch since I didn't purchase it there.

After stopping at several auto repair places that would not install it, I tried the internet and found Master Hitch. They were quick, professional and reasonable.

I also discovered they have hitches for mosts cars in stock. Their prices are reasonable. Because e-trailer does not charge for shipping for orders over $250, I came out slightly better buying from them and having Master Hitch install the hitch.

Since U-haul didn't want my business, I will get a hitch for my Corvette at Master Hitch. They have one in stock.

Some short sighted businesses don't understand that policies that alienate customers are not in their best interest.

From my perspective e-trailer is highly recommended and Master Hitch in Houston is the best.

Edited to add: The folks at Master Hitch can fabricate stuff, too, not just install pre-built and bolt-together stuff.

I was tremendously pleased with e-trailer, but got terribly frustrated trying to find a shop to install the hitch. The installation is not complicated. It is easier with a lift and a second person holding the rack in place while the other person does the drilling and bolting.

I was happy to find a shop that could provide the installation service allowing me to use the forum's recommended vendor.

It is hard to believe that in a city the size of Houston, it is that difficult to obtain reasonable service. I have always been proud that the United States has been service oriented. I guess some big cities are losing that distinction. I also perceive that the economy in Houston has not suffered as much as in other locations giving some local businesses an idea that providing great service is a lower priority.

U-Haul has never been about customer service. They rent stuff and install their line of hitches. I do not think you would actually want the U-Haul 'techs' and I use that word loosely working on your car. I bought a custom hitch from U-haul. The 'techs' spent over 2 hours and still could not get it install correctly. I had to put it in the trunk and do it my self.

Master Hitch is really a good company. If you have a trailer or towing type need they are there.

Most of the receiver kits are designed to be installed with a simple hand tools, though some require use of a drill - no lift needed.

A hitch mounted bike rack makes transporting bikes a breeze. When I recently replaced my sedan, I looked for a model that could have a receiver so that I could reuse my Yakima hitch.

Most businesses do not know what good service is. Just my 2 cents.
