General Cycling Discussion - Doesn't it suck when work gets in the way of cycling?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Today is an absolutely gorgeous day. I have been planning to go for a ride after work today for the whole weekend. I arrive at work this morning to find out I have to go to a meeting that starts at 6, and likely won't get out for at least 2 hours, which means it will be dark when I get home. My week is jammed with activities, and I don't know when I'll get out to ride again. It's just so annoying when this happens and there are so few nice days ahead before it gets too cold.

I feel your pain, ever since I took on my new job my saddle time has decreased greatly. It is so frustating and I still don't know how to fix it. I have been thinking that I should start using my leave instead of hording it. Use one day a month to go for a nice long bike ride of my choice.

You need to be slapped around and punished for making a comment like that in the commuting forum. So, where do you commute to? Or, do you just hang around here to flaunt your retired status? :D

This isn't the commuting forum! :p
I am going to ride today, also!

Yeah. On nice weekends I have to have my nose rubbed in it..On the other side of the plants fence, I see maybe a hundred cyclist pass by..My shift, I am there from Sun Up to sunset when on day shift...I go home feeling so cheated.

Well at least you are wasting valuable company time on bike forums. :D BTW, when does it get too cold? I didn't know that ever happened.
Yes, I'm afraid I am guilty as charged of that. I figure, if they're going to make me go to meetings and miss my ride, at least I should get to be on the bike forums! :D
As for the cold....well, I am so new to cycling, I haven't tried it in the cold yet, but for some reason my asthma really reacts badly to cold air, so I doubt I will make a very good cold weather cyclist.

Doesn't happen if you cycle to work.
I would love to cycle to work but I live so close, it would take me longer to get out and put away my bike than to walk over!

That's why I bring my bike on my trunk rack and take lunch hour rides!

I used to be a rational person, so I doubted I would make a very good cold weather cyclist. Now I commute year-round. :D
Seriously, a friend of mine who commutes has mild asthma and said that his riding has helped a lot. I found that riding in the cold is quite the cardio workout, so maybe you'll find that commuting in cooler weather helps your asthma a lot. Like everything else about biking, take it at your own pace and do what seems comfortable. If the cold air sets your asthma off, don't do it, but if it helps, then do...

LOL! Well how's moving to another country? LOL! I am moving to MD as of January, where I will be a "kept woman" for 6 months. I will be moving in with my boyfriend (who got me into cycling..we met on an internet forum!), and I will be able to cycle morning noon and night if I want! :D During that time we will be deciding if we like living together and if we will get married, etc etc....Anyway, if it doesn't work out and we end up killing each other, my current employer says I can have my job back, so I really feel I have it made. Just 15 more weeks of working to go.....

Well certainly cycling has done wonders for things I never expected. For example, it has improved my technique in ballet class amazingly, and I always thought it would be the opposite. So, perhaps it will do wonders for my lungs too. I will give it a shot!

Uh.. huh.

G'day,
yep...it has improved my ballet technique as well....but my tutu keeps getting caught in the chain...also it doesn't have any pockets for my beer.
cheers,
hitchy
Ahhh, well if your tutu is getting caught in the chain you should really change from the romantic to the classical variety and you will be fine. Can't do much about the beer though.... ;)
Seriously, I have been dancing (I do ballet recreationally and I also belly dance - see pic) for years and I had a terrible chronic hip injury. The physiotherapist wanted me to do these awful squats against a wall, which I could never bear to do, yet cycling, especially uphill has the same effect and the pain is all but gone. It has also strengthened my muscles, which before were very flexible, but soft. Meanwhile the dancing is great for core strength and balance, so the two are a great cross training combo.
It's tough at this time of year when you still get nice days, and it's hard to get out after work because the sun sets earlier. So sometimes all you get are the weekends. ANd the nice days aren't going to last much longer. It's so much easier in the spring, when you can go for a ride until almost 9pm. WAAAAA!

Most of my cycling is done to & from work but being a shift worker I can often get away early or disapear for an hour or so during a shift over the weekend , its a great feeling to be cycling on the companys time ,especialy on a Sunday (double time) I 'spose in theory I would be a pro-cyclist at these times (hope my boss does'nt read this forum, not much chance of that though ).
