So, I was swapping cassetts and this piece came up and I cant figure out where it goes. I was changing between a SRAM Red cassette and a Shimano Ultegra cassette. Any ideas?

First a minor quibble. Don't load high resolution photo's, they take too long to download, and if I weren't waiting for my coffee I wouldn't have waited.

I suspect that your hub and cassette call for a spacer behind the cassette. Check to see if your new cassette is evenly spaced and tight on the hub. It should overhang slightly so the lockring can compress it. If so, you won't need the spacer, unless the RD is too close to the spokes in low gear. Otherwise install this first then the cassette.

I can tell you it did not come from the Sram Red for sure.
As far as the Utegra they do have a spacer but it is not like the one in the photo at least not mine, that could be from an older model that I'm not sure, could be something someone else put on before you?
Utegra does have a spacer that goes on before everything but much thiner than that one.

i dunno its weird. Both cassettes work fine without it.. I just don't want to F*** anything up.

Maybe for fitting older, say 7 speed cassette, on a 9 speed freehub...

Maybe the OP should re-install the old cassette and see if it overhangs the freehub body without the spacer, in which case it was superfluous all along. If not, that's why it was there.

In any case if the new cassette overhangs the body so the lockring doesn't bottom out before compressing it, he doesn't need the spacer now, except if he wants to move the cassette outboard to improve RD spoke clearance.

That spacer is the Mavic spacer. You install it first on the Mavic freehub (grooves facing cassette side), then the Ultegra thin spacer, followed by the 10-Speed Shimano cassette on Mavic FTS-L freehubs.

Your wheel must have been a Mavic wheel.

+1 I had one on my Mavic Equipe's. It wouldn't go on to my new Easton EA90 SL's so I left it off. Good to find out it belongs on the Mavic's only.
