I have 6 year old SL's that have been very reliable to this point. Last week I noticed that the rear was out of true - bad enough that it stopped on the brake pad when I gave it a spin. I took it in to my LBS to have it trued and they told me it was cracked. I've since seen it - about a 3/4" crack through one of the nipple mountings.

The LBS called Mavic and gave me 3 choices: 1) A new rim for $150 plus $60-80 for LBS to rebuild with the old spokes and hub. 2) Mavic will rebuild with new spokes and old hub for $400. 3) New wheel for around $530 that will not match old wheel or existing front.

I should add that I weigh around 225.

Thoughts??

Moneywise, go with the new rim. If, on the other hand, you have been thinking of new wheels, get ahold of spinlite (check their website) and have them build something with your weight in mind. I'm really happy with the wheels they built for me, and at 235, weight was an issue. bk

We had a customer come by the shop last week who cracked the rear hub flange on their 04' SSC SL rear wheel. For the price Mavic was quoting to replace the hub and rebuild he could have bought a new wheel. For some reason they were not willing to let us swap the hub out but would allow us to swap a rim out.
In the end he bought a rear Elite wheel since the weights are pretty close, saved some money and whatever wheel he got was not going to match.

Having the rim replaced would be the least expensive option but this could also be an opportunity to upgrade.

As a bonus I got to keep the wheel so I could pull out the plaws and install them in my cheapie Aksiums. One plaw recently gave up the ghost when it got jammed at around 40 mph and made the loudest, most evil noise I've ever heard on a bike.
