Got some pretty good photos of him HERE (http://www.contracostatimes.com/top-stories/ci_15514062?nclick_check=1).
I don't know the victim but I'm glad Safeway turned over the tapes. Somebody will recognize this guy.

Hope they catch the guy. But a 21-speed Gary Fisher is still worth $1,200?

This look like the Midtown Safeway where I shop. If it is, I'll keep my eyes out for this guy as I also live in the neighborhood.

No, it's in Concord on Willow Pass Road.
The local newsblogger is also running the story and some of the readers have ID'ed his shirt as that of a parking attendant at the nearby John Muir/Mt Diablo hospital. I think he's going to have a visit from the cops by the end of the day.

Whoa - mother of all twists...
The guy in the photo was actually stealing back his own bike which had been stolen from HIM some time ago.
Cops are now investigating the guy who reported the theft from Safeway.

Ya, confusing article.. bike was stolen from owner, sold to another who then brought it back to the same original safeway to return to the original owner. Original owner is then caught on video after just getting back his bike, but some how the fact that this exchange occurred doesn't really make it though to safeway or police and in the end the actual owners photo is released? A lot of good that will do...
So I guess the question stands, is having your bike returned to you at the exact same place it was stolen a good idea, let alone to bring it into the store and be videoed? Sorry but that just confuses the hell out of me.. I could see how someone would get this mixed up.

Oh wait.. I was under the assumption the meeting was arranged. So, do police not know how to confer dates? Report filed 2 weeks ago, video surveillance from yesterday. Hmm....

Safeway must be the place to buy stolen bikes as I just came back from the Midtown one where I shop. There in front of the store is a police officer with a sweet Bianchi 928 bike. Seems a gang banger type was trying to sell it on craigslist. Here's the great part, the potential buyer was a woman I work with. Oh it gets better. The bike is her husbands which was stolen 2 weeks ago out of their garage. The down side is that is only one of three that were stolen from them but because the punk lawyered up, they can't search his house yet. How do you spelll stupid? GANG BANGER

No one was trying to sell the bike at Safeway. The guy who brought the bike to Safeway had bought it from someone else some time ago and presumably thought it was legit. The guy who stole his own bike back just happened to be in the store and saw it there while the first guy was shopping.
