Hi, I'm new to these forums and I need some help.

I've used metal toe cages with single straps for a while now, I like skidding but the straps hurt my feet after a while. I've seen some Hold Fast and leather belts (?) combined with bmx pedals at my local fixed gear shop, they look pretty comfortable but I've also been thinking of switching from single straps to double straps but I'm not sure.. I'm leaning towards the Hold Fast FRS and leather belts like these (http://pedalbelts.blogspot.com/). Could someone please give me some opinions/recommendations/suggestions?

Thank you for reading.

Well, if you really want the best and most comfortable foot retention system, then get a clipless pedal/shoe system, either road or SPD (off road). I prefer the SPD system for street FG use, because the shoes are walkable.

TT, I think he'll lose his street cred if he skid with SPD and road shoes.

HoldFast and BMX pedals work if you want to skid and such.

Let's get this straight, this guy is obviously just looking for some good ol fun with his brand new fixie and he wants to take it out on skid and trick sessions, I don't know why you guys are throwing him road clipless pedals at him...

Agreed 100% with this.

Just go SPD and be happy. You won't go back.

i can agree too. spd and egg beaters are very nice for walking and they both hold great.

I went SPDs, and then I went back. Because the shoes look dumb.

I still have them on my fast bikes, but the fixed and the 1x7 are both cages and straps. They've all got their place.

i like my time rx-s's. have pearl izumi shoes for both my spds and my, uh, look cafe rxs pedals. pi makes a good, affordable shoe imo.

for clipless it's really toshi/mks/kashimax doubles or bust. everything else feels like crap after those

oh and clipless wins at skids

Try dual-sided spds w/touring shoes to eliminate 'click' when doing errands off the bike. The clipless combo takes a little getting used to, but after your first 15 mins or so you should be ok with them. Some people recommend Crank Bros eggbeaters, but I've no experience with them.

I have and use Shimano clipless, single and double straps. Clipless is the clear winner for cycling purposes but requires special shoes. Shimano mountain shoes fit my feet well and look damn good these days. Totally appropriate in jeans. But, the special shoes are limiting. Single toe straps I think provide the same amount of cycling performance as doubles and are a smidge easier to get into but I'm such a Fred I tend to roll over single straps when I stuff my foot into the clip requiring me to bend over and doink with them. This has the occasional, unattractive side effect of crushing "the boys" if things aren't situated just so. Double straps take a little more getting used to but it's not some huge thing and because there is more meat there I don't roll them over when sliding into the clips. Of course, with clips you can essentially wear whatever fit into the clips making them more "life compatible".

I wonder if they work well on non-BMX pedals...

I have been debating on using these on my MKS Slyvan pedals I just bought instead of my clips. Yes they will work with these pedals. illdizzl does this.

Just to confirm, is single straps dangerous for Single speed because they Snap when skidding? or because the come loose? Is it more of a problem with Nylon straps? IE Leather is better?

Nylon seems to work fine for me. Never really understood why the are so looked down upon. They are also easier to tighten and loosen while riding. But I'm sure there is a logical reason for using leather, I just don't know what it is.

It's been vaguely implied before, since I use a Terry Butterfly and have Specialized Riata shoes, both of which I have recommended in saddle/shoe threads.

I'd think leather would snap long before decent-quality nylon. Skidding? Not tightening straps enough or having them break might be a bigger problem spinning downhill.

If the OP isn't comfortable with singles, doubles won't be much better. Get larger clips, or bend them a bit, or go with straps like HoldFast. Never tried them, but people seem to like them. They won't work with my MK9 pedals, but will with wellgo or Sylvan track pedals, etc.

SPDs are sometimes stolen, so city riders use clips instead, which also allows most regular shoes to be worn. I have SPDs on my geared bike, and fail to see how "looking dumb" factors into it. My shoes are low-profile brown/black Shimano SPD, so maybe you'e thinking of rainbow-colored carbon road shoes?

Thanks for all the replies, even Scrodzilla's post about the logo. Haha.

I see a lot of people suggesting riding clipless, but the idea of buying specific shoes to be able to ride clipless does not appeal me. I like to change shoes a lot or just ride with whatever shoes I feel like riding with.

For those who tried Hold Fast FRS, does it help you skid without having to lean forward? How comfortable are they?

Single straps are *not* dangerous; they just tend to dig into your feet more if/when you do skids. Double straps spread the force out over a larger area so they're more comfortable. High quality straps, whether double or single, don't break in normal use. Nylon straps don't degrade if left exposed to the elements, but (in my experience) tend to slip under stress. The best straps are nylon/leather laminates.
