Does anyone have one? Are they hard to maintain since it isn't quite saltwater or freshwater?

same care as a salt water. Have to make sure the salinity doesn't drop to low or go up to high (along with everything else) I used a home made wet dry but a smaller wet dry is pretty cheap to buy these days. I had a few brackish set ups where I kept kept mostly puffers and mollies. (Mollies were food for the puffers!)

My wife has one with ghost shrimp. Seems pretty simple, but then she has a saltwater as well.

What about air pumps/filter? Do I need a special one because of the salt? How often do you check the salinity? I found a store that sells puffers and a cheap tank on cl so I'm really tempted to get this going I'm just not sure about the whole salt thing.

To the extent that most fish sold for brackish aquariums are estuarine, they can stand quite a bit of fluctuation in salinity (like they would see in the real world when exposed to tides).
Some species sold for brackish can only hack it at certain life stages, some want to go fully marine or fully fresh at maturity.

Wow - that set-up is pretty Casper!
Someday I want to get back into the aquarium stuff - I kept a couple small 20 gallons for snits&giggles (had planned on breeding some high end bettas - with first breeding a nice pair to start with - but the cats in my interim place of living took care of that :() ...
... but they are stored in my basement as I'm just in transit for the last couple years (and next year) - and besides my little cat would absolutely ADORE any type of water facility - OoOooooo and with FISH! - so I cannot do anything.
I am hoping that where I land in a year that my little cat, Ming, will have settled down more .......hmmm

see that ****! I was all over my 125G mini reef and it still went to hell within three years! Next time I try salt water I'll do it in a tiny set up and pay no ****ing mind to it! =0(

Well, after a lot of research I don't think I'm going to do it until about a half a year when I move out of state. I'd love too now but don't really have the funds. So in turn I might get a betta to liven the house. As much as I think bettas are useless and pointless.
