I live in Roanoke, VA and picked up a bicycle after 17 years since last one. I was taking my kids to local park and allowing them to ride for a few hours, and this was boring for me. I purchased inexpensive road bike 21 spd, and joined them for the rides. I forgot how much fun it was to ride and enjoy being outside. I've outfitted my bike with speedometer, lights, pump, patch kit, and pannier and will hopefully commute to work 8 miles away one day.
I'm 32 and have remained in good shape from working out so I didn't experience leg fatique when riding several miles the other day. There aren't alot of bike lanes in the city, so if I decide to commute I'd have to hit the main roads.

I have enjoyed reading the threads and have been lurking for awhile. Are there any good sites for bike routes beside google maps?

Welcome "M" to Bike Forums.

Main roads and neighborhood roads are the way I ride.
Sunday AM on your bike is a good time to explore routes to your work place.
Google Maps has bicycle routing.

You should post in the Commuting Threads for help.

these seem like excellent places for car-free biking...
i walk my dogs on these pretty often... im planning on getting back in the swing of biking and
doing some tuning on the greenways before I hit the streets too much.

many of these are connected by neighborhood bike routes.
lucky you if you can pull-off part of your commute here!
