Introductions - Middle aged near rookie from SE PA
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Like the title says I am pretty much a true cycling beginner. Up until about a month ago, I probably spent no more than an hour or 2 on a bicycle my entire life. Since that time, I've put in about 50 miles on trips ranging from 2 to 4 miles and am shooting for a 10 mile trip by the end of this month. I am riding a 2010 trek 7100 and am slowly but surely gaining confidence.
For now, I just want to master the basics of balance and road manners and am currently searching for good places to learn. Long term I would like for it to by my main means of exercise and hopefully at some point get into some charity rides/competitions. I'd really like to be doing 50 miles a week by the end of the summer.
I'm loving it so far!

Hey Steve welcome to Bike Forums! Looks like you are well on your way to getting to your goal. The best thing is to take your time and move along at the speed that you are comfortable with. By speed, I mean...not mph but progress. Just remember that YOU operate the machine, the machine does not operate you.
Good luck and have fun!

I'm a lot like you. I'm 43, and just started cycling seriously in April. It's a killer at first, with 3 or 4 miles making you feel pretty winded. But you do improve quickly. 20 mile rides are pretty common for me now.

The League of American Bicyclists offers bike safety courses.
Here are upcoming courses in PA. --> http://www.bikeleague.org/cogs/resources/findit/?courses=1&state=PA&submit.x=35&submit.y=10
Thanks for the responses and encouragement everyone. The bike is feeling better and better every ride and I am looking forward to the longer rides.
Ron, thanks for the links; 2 of those classes are right in my back yard.
