Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - 09 Trek T1 S3X

Fun to build, fun to ride. This is my third fixed build... if you count a roadbike conversion or assembling a Windsor The Hour from the shipping box. So I'm calling it my first build from scratch

Got the hubs from United Bicycle Supply a while ago, built them up with full blackout treatment--black hubs, black spokes, black nipples, black HPlusSon rims. 36h is all the hubs come, wheels are 3x lacing front and rear. Strongness.

Boss ordered a track bike because I begged him to get one for the floor. He said he would, but if it didn't sell, I'd have to buy it at cost. Um, OK... 09 frames were the last year they were welded in Waterloo; from 10 on, they're coming in from Taiwan.

Took a while to get gumption up enough to drill into a perfectly good new frame in order to pop-rivet on the front cable stop. Once that happened, the rest of the shifter cable setup and adjustment was a piece of cake. Pulley is a Problem Solvers clamp-on.

Limited riding, so far, and I'm not a dedicated fixed gear rider, so not much decent feedback I can give. Play in the hub is not heinous, don't imagine it will be an issue for anyone used to dealing with a slightly loose chain. Might require a bit more regular attention to chain tension.

Hub feels a bit clunky, like any other SA 3sp; shifting is kind of particular--no shifting under load, although upshifts seem to work better than down. Pick the gear you need before you need it, or it will be a real momentum killer.

Well I would hope so... this thing cost probably four times as much as the Kilo.

It isn't healthy how much I want this bike.

I'm curious on the weight of the whole thing with that hub.

I'd put that bike at a hair over 17 pounds. My stock 54cm T1 weighed in at 14.9 on the scale I used.

Just under 19 lbs on the shop scale.

The Select components are not light, neither are the pedal assemblies, but the deep section rims and the 3sp hub definitely add weight.

Actually did not move the seat forward yet, still adjusting to the position... but did not really ride it stock for any real milage. So I still need to dial in the fit a bit. Will probably flip the stem for a bit of rise... left it down purely for initial photos...

lets see a picture of the fit. the reach looks long.

I've seen one of those at one of my LBS's and I was about to pull the trigger. But it was one size too big....

Great looking bike and very clean installation of the hub cabling. I'm not a fan of the S3X hub, bad progression of ratios IMO, but if I were ever to do something with one I would use your adaptation as a template.

The wheels certainly are. 1950 for the pair on the Trek T1. Considering the bike is 15 pounds for essentially a g-note it's why I ride one. Replacing the hideous seatpost with carbon tomorrow (finally).

The wheels are light but their low spoke count doesn't harbour confidence if you're riding in the city! Give me lots of spokes and strong rims, please. I don't mind the extra weight anymore.

Anyways, this build is sexeh. Now I want bullhorns. T1 owners unite!

Low spoke count? Well I'm 205 and I've been riding them since I was much heavier than that. In the city. Never put a wrench to the spokes.

My bike is a 2008 model. They are all the same really. Looks just like this one did.

2009 T1 here. Will post pictures soon.

I prefer the black frame over the red one. I'm starting to see a few T1's on ebay. There was a black complete the other day for a steal. Not even close to my size though... : (

2010 black T1 bikes are made in Taiwan to Trek spec, and Trek cut the retail price significantly. Dealers were not amused--my 09 is a leftover I got at cost. I think the 09s were originally priced something ridonkulous, like $1100 or so... but you get the made in the US frame.
