Foo - There's Nothing Like a Thunderstorm on a Lake, on a Sailboat!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I had a great weekend this weekend. I did some sailboat racing, both on my I Boat, and my Uncle's E Boat. I also had a bit of an adventure.

We were out about 6 miles from the dock, and had to make a run for the channel racing a big, nasty, severe thunderstorm. By the time we were about 2 miles from the channel and shelter, lightning was hitting the lake (Not a good thing when you have an aluminum mast sticking up in the air 41 feet, I can assure you!), and the thunder was getting pretty intense. We could see the wall cloud approaching with the gust front, as well, and it looked NASTY! No images or video, because, frankly, we were a bit busy at the time trying to get off the lake. We were literally the last bout out there at that point.

We rounded the point and had just entered sheltered water when the gust front hit. The winds were in excess of 70 MPH, and the rain was blowing dead sideways. All in all, it was a good thing we got it in the shelter of the point, or we'd have been swimming after the blowover. Visibility was cut to 50 or so feet, and we were still in gusty, swirly air even in shelter and it was tricky sailing because the channel is really tight.

This took me back to when I was a teenager.....this isn't the first time my Uncle and I were the last sailboat off the water with a storm bearing down, and I'm sure it won't be the last. We've been out early enough in the Spring that you would need a drysuit to prevent hypothermia from the cold water, and late enough in the fall that the boat is busting skim ice sailing it over to load it on the trailer for the winter. :p

Been there and done that. Got caught in a micro burst in the Cal 20. Blew our 20 foot boat boat that displaces 1950 lb. and has 900 lb bulb keel over like it was a pool toy. Broke the back stay, filled the cockpit with water. We just let the sheets loose and sat there until it was calm enought to drop the sails and motor in.

Glad you got out okay.

We had a great night last night sailing in Dallas Race Week. Saw some really cool boats, including an 11 meter by Precision.

Apple PR is really slipping. I didn't hear a peep about the launch of the iBoat. :innocent:

Love sailing...haven't done it in a long time...what the heck is an "I boat" and an "E boat"?

An e-boat is a generic virtual vessel. An i-boat has proprietary batteries, and costs 3 times as much. :p

E boats and I boats are classes of racing scows. Sailing is a lot like biking with a very diverse vocabulary. Last night was asked to come in on the vang a bit.

I hear "scow" and I think "garbage". Quite the contrary, eh? So...Melges is a big manufacturer of said "Scows"?

Melges is THE manufacturer of modern scows. Mine, the I Boat, is actually a Johnson hull, my Uncle's E is a top of the line Melges.

Oakback, find a local marina with a yatch club and see if they have a crew bulletin board, real or virtual. Post on it that you are wanting to learn to crew. Easy and free way to learn to sail.

Stop it. I'm poor enough as it is and cannot afford to start sailing.

If you are crewing on someone elses boat, the only cost usually is whatever you bring to eat or drink. Many boat owners will even bring food and drink for the crew, but that is not a given. I went from sitting on the rail to being able to do almost any job on a race boat in a few years and have gotten to sail and race against some really good, sailers.

There is no "local marina with a yacht club". I'd have to drive a minimum of 3 hours to even get close to one, despite the fact that I'm 30 minutes (max) from the coast.

Not even on a local lake? Dallas has one or two yatch clubs on most of it's lakes.

I'd really love that but cycling and school and kids seem to be gobbling up an inordinate amount of time.
