It will sooooo explode on you mid skid into a busy intersection with a bus coming in one direction and a semi coming in the other. The result in using that chain is certain death.

Can anyone explain to me why, lol. I don't get it.

If you are riding a SS/FG, why in God's sweet name are you riding a chain that is built for quick, easy shifting?

Kind of funny, the chain this is about isn't for 9 speed, it's a bmx chain and I only had to remove one peice and not a whole link. And the chain I put on the mtb a KMC K710sl failed.

KMC X9 series chains are 11/128" 9-speed chains.

 You bastard!

I do find it weird that the box says BMX though. I wasn't saying it would fail...just pointing out what that particular chain is "intended use" is according to KMC's site.

If it got hard plates and hard pins (and proper rivetting), any chain's a good game. Geared chains got some lateral flex, but it don't matter with proper tension and good chainline. I wonder why suddenly you all are so excessively negative. (But X9SL seem to have kinda wildly mixed reviews ... so not really a homerunner, tho.)

But that being said, X9SL is kinda too expensive, isn't it?

Dannihilator
07-21-10, 08:30 PM
It was pricey.

Udate chain is fine on the pista, but snapped another chain on the mtb. This time a sram chain that I had just put on, resulting in me jamming my right knee into the back of the stem.

You sound like you snap your chain periodically. ... Sounds like I ought to stick with a track or BMX chain. Kinda silly to pay more for more worries when I can pay less and worry less. Sorry Danni.

Chains used on MTBs experience a much higher tension force than road or track, due to the use of much smaller inner chainrings. The only chain failure that I've ever experienced was when climbing a steep trail on my MTB in the small chainring. Still, I only use 1/8 chains on all my FG bikes, rather than 3/32 chains meant for geared bikes, since 1/8 chains are pretty much idiot-proof and I don't have to worry about sprocket thickness.

Dannihilator

Knocks on wood, I have had great luck with 3/32 chains on my fixed gear.

The mtb is geared at the moment as a 1x8. Picked up a sram from where I work on the way home from my first ride because my shimano had a twisted link and the sram was the only 8 speed chain left in stock.
