Bicycle Mechanics - Do nine speed rear deraillers work with 7 speed chains

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I think I'm going to dump my old campy rear derailler off my 12 speed bike (since the pulleys are shot apparently...too bad I figured this out after I sprung for a brand new chain).

CAn I put a modern 9 speed shimano 105 derailler on my 12 speed and expect it to work with the wider chain of a 6, 7,8 speed. I'm think maybe not since the pulleys and cages might be narrower (designed for narrow 9 speed chain ).

MY eventual goal is to switch over to 126mm cassette free-hub and run 8 cogs off a 9 speed cassette (with 9 speed specers) on the 7 speed freehub....but I want to know if I can use the derailler in the meantime with the freewheel before I complete the transition to the cassette.

Yes - no problem.
