Bicycle Mechanics - Please recommend a cheap way to get my Trek 4300 Alpha shifting again :)

I have an old Trek 4300 but I'm still putting a lot of miles on it for commuting. The right V-brake 8 speed shifter is giving up the ghost. I took it apart but it's not happy with life. I probably need new cables, too. The mechanics of the bike otherwise work fine.

Can anybody recommend a right-side shifter good for this particular bike? I suppose I'll get a new cable at the same time. I don't much care about the left side. Two of the three chainrings are worn so I keep it in the big gear 100% of the time and when that one wears out I'll probably remove the left shifter entirely and go with a single chainring up front.

Remember, this is a cheap bike and I just need a cheap option to keep me going!

If you have a LBS that does a lot of upgrading for customers, they might have a takeoff that you could use, for cheap. Next least expensive might be one on ebay or Craigs list.

Friction shifter, it will work on a 6,7,8, maybe 9 but they are getting packed rather close.
