hi everyone,

does anyone know who sells or makes a decent single sided hub for commuting/light offroad?

I've had a look a Phil hubs, which are nice but don't seem very forthcoming with info on their single-sided version.. and Pantour suspension hubs, which look more trouble than they're worth. Their website also doesnt seem to have been updated since 2004!

I was thinking of getting a custom axle made to fit into a standard double sided hub, but the axle would be too thin.

cheers

Chris King makes through-axle hubs (http://chrisking.com/hubs/hbs_24mm). I believe that design is what's used on single-sided forks (like C'dale's Lefty) and on trikes. Not sure if those hubs are directly adaptable to a single-sided setup.

Single sided hubs are used a lot for wheel chairs so if you do a search for wheel chair hubs you will find more choices. Roger

thanks for the help guys. the chris king stuff looks seriously tasty...

I've been looking at wheelchair hubs, but there don't seem to be any high-end manufacturers that offer just a hub. They all seem to come as wheelsets.

I suppose I could buy a wheelset and throw most of it in the bin?!

Sturmey makes some with drum brakes:

Your local Giant dealer should have one in the parts catalog for their Halfway (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jdgaGaDfeqE/SKY55xsnXiI/AAAAAAAAA38/iTwV7VvVy6M/s400/halfwayfrontfork.jpg) folding bike.

thanks for the response.

I've always wondered what Giant do with the rear hub/axle on the Halfway. It all looks pretty standard but there must be huge bending moments on the rear axle and frame with a hub and 6 speed cassette all mounted on one side.

Any 20MM through axle hub should work. There are 14mm BMX hubs that might do the trick also.

A lot of people on a home-built recumbent forum recommend hubs from Bitex.
