Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
so, after getting knocked off my bike by a car last April, I subsequently crashed going downhill at about 20mph a few weeks later. Messed up my right hand and elbow pretty bad...the elbow healed up okay, if a bit slowly, but the hand kept giving me grief, especially while riding (putting my weight on bars).
I finally got a CT Scan and turns out my Hamate bone has a hairline fracture at the base of the hook, my radial styloid process (in the forearm near your wrist) is described as a chronic fracture with partial fusion of the fragments and I have a tear in the scapholunate ligament.
Anyone here ever had to deal with this? I am guessing surgery is in order, just wondering about recovery, how soon you could get back on the bike, etc.
No clue, but I hope you get fixed and heal up quickly.

I'm guessing this means you're gonna need some help with the "maintenance". Good thing you have a wife.
:innocent:
If you have $24 and a 220v outlet on a dedicated circuit, I can probably help you out.

I'm afraid amputation is the only solution here.

Hey, didn't you get some useless advice from Foo when this originally happened? Like "tell your wife" and "git to teh doctor"...
:P

Quit yer whining and come out to Brooklyn Bridge park tomorrow night for the Big Lebowski! Guy w/ the broken hand brings the pizza!
I meant mint
Just spoke to the Dr. He called it a hairline fracture, and said it shouldn't need surgery (whew) but that he wants to see me in a month, and - shudder - NO weight-bearing shenanigans till then. Translation: no bike for pgoat. For a month. You may as well have amputated my sanity....

Surgery on the hand is definitely not necessary after amputation.
Get a recumbent and fredbike over!
Do you have cut off jeans, a tie dye tshirt and hemp sandals? If not, you can borrow mine.
If you want it to heal, really listen to your doc. Don't cheat.
No Jetskis, no bikes (and I'd stay away from the mint if you know what is good for you). Heck, playing the bass is gonna be tough (you might want to clear it with your doc). Otherwise, the surgery will keep you casted for 3 months postop.
Do you have a leather gimpsuit, a ball gag and stilletto heels? If not, you can borrow mine.
jsharr'd it for you.

No way can he ride a recumbent in that. Maybe he can find someone in Alt Bike to take him around in a bike chariot though............

If the fracture fails to heal the Dr. will have to get out the ol bone screw gun and that will get your attention.
This is all slow torture.Give up the defective hand and get fitted with a reliable hook and a parrot to sit on your shoulder.

Does that help with traffic light sensors detecting you if you're riding a carbon bike?

Ohhh. They make bikes from carbon now?
*drools*
So I am gonna lose my mind if I have to stay off the bike completely for a whole month. I can deal with not riding hard/fast till then (just barely) but I use my mtb as basic transportation so this is challenging already after two or three days.
I can't afford to go buy a fourth bike to get upright and take the weight off my hands so I was toying with the idea of getting a swept back steel bar (like the Wald 867 (http://www.waldsports.com/index.cfm/867handlebars.html), $15 on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00131YQO6/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000AO7DLK&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0JZB6WRN0HHVXWA8V9PM)) and replacing the typical straight/flat mtb handlebars on there now.
My only concerns are:
1. would that bar's clamp area work with a standard old school (1 1/8" quill for threaded headset, ca. early 1990s) mtb stem?
2. How crazy would it be to mount an old Shimano brake lever/rapidfire pod on there? Maybe on the outer area, right in front of the grips?

1. MTB bars are a standard 25.4mm clamp section so it should work fine.
2. It may be crazy...do it anyway. If you can post some pics I may have some other ideas for solutions.
here is an old pic - the set up is basically the same, albeit with bar ends on there now.

I did realize after my last post the stem clamp should work but also that the cables would probably be too short...I do have a stubby short extension (as in: pretty much 0mm) stem with a longer high-rise quill I could swap in although it's a pain to deal with since the original stem as seen here has that ancient pulley for anchoring the front brake cable housing

Ooof. I always forget about cantis because I wish they'd go away forever. Yeah, time for a V-brake upgrade or one of these:
http://www.rivbike.com/images/products/full/0000/3377/15-083bike.jpg
Cables will most likely need to be lengthened, but it was probably time to replace them anyway, eh? ;) The smoother shifting is usually worth it.
actually it's a brand new shifter cable; the brakes were done last year.
