Bicycle Mechanics - Need a bike pump and gauge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a mountain bike. Right now I have a cheap $10 schwinn hand pump. I dont feel like it works very well. It also feels like I am breaking my valve too. One time I put it on my valve then pumped it like 50 times it it seemed like it was stuck on the valve and hard to come off and it broke off when I removed it. Also, it has a lock on the pump but I never use the lock. I dont know what its for.
What pump should I get? I dont want to spend more than $30 and I will probably buy off of amazon unless it is cheaper somewhere else. Looking through reviews it seems like these are some good ones. Is it better to get a pump with the gauge built in?I dont know anything about bikes so if you can assume that in your response that is great. I bike about 2 miles a day in the city. My front tire has been going flat pretty often.

Planet Bike 1007-3 Comp Floor pump

never skimp on a floor pump! a good quality floorpump with a guage (and setable pointer) is worth its weight in gold.

^ Will agree if its a pump you want for home then yes get a good floor pump if its for your bike to carry along still suggest the Topeak Road Morph other choice for carry along pump CO2 I use an Innovations SecondWind Road CO2 Pump which is a Combo both hand and CO2 pump in one.
But as far as a pump for home do get a floor pump.

At home I keep a Air Tower 1 and on my bike I keep a Road Morph G. Since you ride a mountain bike I'd suggest the Turbo Morph G instead of the Road Morph G.

I like my Joe Blow Pro for it's high-mounted gauge. I keep one at home, and one in the trunk of my car for away rides. I carry a Turbo Morph (with hose, foot, t-handle and flip-down analog gauge) in my Camelbak.
