I already posted on some automotive forums but Foo resourcefulness is sometimes surprising so here it is:

This is on a Hyundai Accent 2000, automatic transmission.

While replacing the driver's side front axle, a piece of what looks like a transmission seal, broke. Here's a picture:

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn53/RubenX_Longwood/Huyndai/DSCN0791-captioned.jpg

You can see the whole where the axle goes, and this conical thing that is attached to the transmission. It had 5 bolts (I already took them out). But I have no idea if I can just jank it it out and replace it.

I went to the dealership with the photo, they say the part is not sold separately. Is part of an overhauling kit, part number "4501025A01", description "SEAL KIT-ATA OVERHAUL".

Therefore, my 2 questions:

1) Any idea where to get the part, or the kit, cheap?

2) How can I replace this?

Thanks in advance...

PS: Please not that this time I haven't set the car on fire :)

Well, seeing how it is transmission related, I would imagine that it is not cheap or easy.

Guns&Roses tried to replace axle once and it didn't work well. (sorry this is foo)

1) Disclaimer: I don't know the specifics of your car, nor have I ever worked on a Hyundai transmission, nor for that matter am I a professional mechanic.
2) Generally speaking, pulling half shafts/cv joints tends to drain the fluid inside the transmission/differential case, so I wouldn't be terribly worried about that, unless you've actually broken something.
3) If you're talking about the black rubber thing in the center, that may be cause for concern. Sometimes you can pull those out from the outside with pliers and press a new one in with a large socket or black of wood. If you decide to go this route, make sure you have the new part in your hand first 1) to make sure it is the right thing and 2) by looking at it you should be able to see how the old one will come out.
4) I just saw the white thing by the lower right of the picture (will you please circle the specific part you're talking about?). That looks like some sort of cheap paper gasket. 1) Someone (Autozone/Advance/Napa) may have it. If not, or if you're feeling lazy, just use some copper/red/black (just make sure it's oil safe) RTV (Permatex), clean the surfaces, and slather it on before bolting it up. Then, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS and wait however many hours it says to before driving the car.

Yeah if it's that white thing that goes around to all the bolt holes that should be doable. But the picture is pretty information-free so it's hard to tell.

It's hard to tell where the seal retainer is on that set up. If the aluminum part we can see is the seal retainer, you will have to install it from the inside of the trans (Which would explain why it comes as part of the trans seal rebuild kit).

Are you in a big city? If so then take that photo to the biggest automatic transmission repair shop in town and ask them. Your car has been out long enough that there should be parts available in junkyards and maybe from the aftermarket. You might even be able to RTV the old flange back in place with just 4 bolts and get by that way. There probably isn't any load on that piece, it likely just holds the seal. (The seal is the black donut in the middle.)

You should get as much JBWeld as you can carry. Then glue jsharr, ROUkie and SingingSabre together where the broken part is. Then junk the car.

Rube, where you been playa?I thought the everglades gobbled you up.

Any car I have owned I always purchase the Haynes manual for that car ($20 Autozone). This will give pretty simple instructions for replacing the transaxel.Usually the seals should be replaced but if it does not leak, forgettaboutit. The library will also have the manual for that clunker/beaver magnet.

Here's the part that broke:

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn53/RubenX_Longwood/Huyndai/broken02.png

And here's is where it broke from:

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn53/RubenX_Longwood/Huyndai/broken01.png

and here is again the original picture I posted:

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn53/RubenX_Longwood/Huyndai/DSCN0791-captioned.jpg

From the manual diagrams it seems that this metal thingy holds the black rubber thingy. The rubber thingy is the actual seal, that did not broke. The metal thingy, according to the dealer dude, does not come as a separate part, but as part of a kit to do a complete overhaul of the transmission (that even includes the whole transmission case, wtf).

I called a transmission mechanic who after looking at it, told me to use some silicon gasket goo (depicted below), put the screws back and hope for no leaks.

^Black goo thingy^

I did as instructed by the subject mater expert, took the car around the neighborhood and while it's leaking from everywhere else, it is not leaking any transmission fluid. I tried just now to take a pic, but without the car on the jackstands, there's no room for the tripod, my hands are shaky and only got this fussy picture:

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn53/RubenX_Longwood/Huyndai/broken03.png

Sounds Addendum:

- The wore off axles, when turning, were making "clack clack clack claka".
- The wore of pads and rotor were making a "wiss wisss wiiiissss".

How did you pull off breaking that? You have some special skills Reuben.

What you have right there is the end cap for the differential. What were you doing taking those bolts out anyways?

Last Hyundai I helped replace an axle on, the transmission side was easy. Just pull.

Eh, if it holds, it holds.

The original picture makes much more sense now that you posted the close up. Yeah...that's part of the case you broke. I'm also curious just how you broke it, and why you had those bolts out at all. It does look like you tried to pry it out. That said, as an engineer I can't in good conscience recommend fixing aluminum case bits with RTV (although that recommended does sound familiar...) to someone else, but I also can't say that I wouldn't do it myself. Normally I'd tell someone they would probably be fine with a fix like that, but with your luck I would avoid bumping into any carbon fiber bikes, it might just cause your car to explode into a million pieces. Check on it when you change your oil, and if nothing is changing, you're probably fine.

Anyway, here's what happens

I was out for a nice Saturday morning ride on my bike and I ended up looking a whole lot worse than that. Let's all remember to be careful out there. I thought I was careful too, but something failed me.

I worked awhile in a garage and managed to only get a few cuts every now and then. It seemed at the time that we weren't overly concerned about safety but we knew what to do and the proper way to do it, so we acted safely without thinking about it.

Heck, as a teenager I knew how to make change without a cash-register or calculator. Anyway, it was his girlfriend that tossed the flywheel at him. So I guess you just gotta keep the chics out of the garage.
