First bike in a while, I used to have a 80's univega and loved it. So I am looking around for a lightweight road bike around 52cm and under, 1986 and up, for cheap. I really need to get some excercise. I saw some affordable treks at a shop but thought i could do better used. Noticed a couple of carbon frames from the early 90s but they are too far from me. Any online shops have budget or used stuff?

Should be able to find something in the 3 yr old range, keep looking and be patient.

Craigslist is my friend but it's not for everyone. The South Bay is a treasure trove compared to Sacramento. You should be able to find a bike for you easy in no time.
Also, the prices here www.bikesdirect.com are about as cheap as used.

52cm and under would probably be too small for 5'9".
ebay and craigslist will do you some good.
Look for old steel frame bikes. you can pick them up cheap! Buy a cheap bike first! Get used to the size and then sell it and use the money towards a new/newer bike. Its hard to know what size bike you need until you ride one for a while. Then you'll say,"I wish it were a little smaller or larger" You'll then know what kind of bike is for you.

it seems like there arent a lot of old steel frame japanese/european bike around here, i do hope to find a good cheap one soon, so i can feel it out like you say. I had a circa 84 univega that was heavy but great, i think i paid 20 bucks for it, dont remeber where it is hopefully in my parents garage still. it was mint. put in a lot of miles on it, it was definitely too tall for me but still alot of fun
