Fifty Plus (50+) - Reality Sets in - EBay shock!!

OK, I decided to keep my Lemond BA, have it refitted, a new wheel, new stem, etc., - put about $300+ into it.

The one I originally paid about $1,600 for all told.

So, I go on EBAY - and what do I see?

My EXACT bike for sale for $299 (starting bid) or $499 - buy it now. The bike I have put thousands of miles on this summer.

Since it only has 1.5 days left on the bidding, and there have been no bids, the $299 looks like a possible price.

If I lived in Louisville, KY, I believe I would buy it simply for the spare parts, wheel set, etc. Can't get those red-rimmed Mavic wheels any more.

Oh well, I still love my Lemond BA

Anyone else get a "reality check" lately??

I'm thinking about selling off a few bikes to clear out some garage space but I doubt I'd get much for them (compared to the original cost). If anyone is interested in a Ti road bike or a steel mtb ht both Indy Fab, let me know.

Yep. A woman calls me off my Criagslist ad, wherein I am seeking a decent commute/road bike, budget $500.
She is offering a GIANT OCR1 - in the wrong frame size, for more money. I'm a large-extra large (6'1")and she has a medium frame.
But she wants to make me a "great" price.... $650. Okay, it isnt a great price - but its tolerable.

So, guess what they sell for on ebay - $650-$700. At best.

So here's a superb bike, in nice shape, that is too small for me. It isn't practical for me to own it and her great price turns out to be a riders price, so I cant even flip it.

Reality. Bummer.

Used bikes are great deals, no question about it.

Plenty of used Lemonds floating around (there are 12 for sale on Seattle Craigslist right now); I am guessing they were bought by the kind of enthusiast who is looking to upgrade after a few years.

This may close for higher than $299 but I'd be surprised if the seller gets the "buy it now" price of $499.

Not a bike but a few years ago I was looking for a particular lamp that I wanted. I could get one for £90 retail from any bike shop but one shop had them at £70. Nearly bought one but looked on E-bay to see that the shop selling at £70 had them offered as Shop soiled at buy now for £50. I started bidding on one at £30 but the price went up quick and dropped out. Went back after the auction had closed to find that the buy now at £50 had sold for £75.

Couple of months later I looked again and got one for £25.

This means you have excellent taste - and a poor value sense.
The way to make good money on ebay is to have something to offer which others value highly. Common stuff brings common money, no matter how badly we wish otherwise.

Perception is the key. Human nature people always want something for nothing and want to sell used at near new prices. LOL

Used bike prices are all over the map. I've been lucky. I bought this Peugeot for $100 and sold it for $290:

I think I have seen that bike in the flesh, so to speak, out on the road. It is a handsome bike, for sure. It's too big for me, I think.
