Commuting - shoes

I am in need of shoes that I can wear on the bike(I use power grips, not looking for clipless) and off the bike all day every day. I have had 2 pairs of keens which didn't last at all, 1st pair just fell apart,2nd pair I wore out the sole in 3months. Only shoes I've owned that lasted were redwings but I dont like their styles. Has anyone tried chrome shoes? Vasques, Tevas, and Chacos don't last either.

Try some mt bike sport shoes. They are made with an optional cleat hole on the sole, try specialized or lake.

I use power grips too. Mostly I use my (non-cycling specific) Merrells. The signature Merrell sole seem to work really well for gripping bike pedals, and I think being a sneaker-boot hybrid they tend to have a stiffer sole then just regular sneakers. I've been using mine for about a year, and there's no signs of them falling apart.

Also, I got a pair of free Chrome shoes a while back when they were doing a promotion... they're Ok. Some people claim they're not comfortable to walk in, I think they're fine to walk around in all day. Certainly not the most comfortable shoe to walk in, but not unbearable or anything. For cycling they work alright, much nicer then biking in a regular sneaker. I think I've had them for about 5 months, and there's some stitching coming undone already. I also wish the sole was a little more grippy. My personal opinion on Chrome shoes is that for free they're totally worth it, but no way I spend $70+ on them.

Are the mountain bike sport shoes comfortable enough for everyday wear?

How are the power grips? I was looking into buying a set of either clipless or power grips, I'm currently using mouse traps and I've always wanted to try some clipless pedals.

I went from clipless on my road bike, toeclips on my hybrid and rubber platforms on my Townie to PwerGrips on all three and my son's MTB. Should have done that years earlier. I wear Converse hi-tops on the bike. So far the soles have lasted me for years on the bike, but the canvas uppers wear out fast where they contact the straps. Which is okay with me; I just wear ratty looking sneakers with good soles.:D

I use PowerGrips myself on both my commuterized hardtail and touring bike. I usually wear hi to mid top basketball sneakers. Whatever is the cheapest with me. Right now I am wearing Starter brand from walmart which lasts a few months.

I believe your supposed to change your sneakers every few months anyway because the cushioning begins to fail which could lead to foot problems. I'm no podiatrist so if someone knows better, they can chime in.

I don't think that matters on a bike since you don't have the injury causing repetitive impact that the cushioning is supposed to protect from.
