What's up w UCI's decision to allow outside support to mtb racers starting next year? I liked that racers had to fix it themselves or bring gear that wouldn't break. It's bogus to swap wheels w domestique, unfair to privateer, what are your thoughts?

cycling should be an individual sport. I don't think road racing should allow bike swaps and such, either.

Interesting thread.

I agree that part of the "charm" of MTB racing was the true nature of the individual accomplishment achieved within the sport. With this change, it will be a team effort. Similar to NASCAR. Gotta have'yer pit crew Hoss....

man i remember riding a xc race like 7 years ago going up a hill with a tube in the back pocket of my jersey you had to have a pump and some other tools and crap that you might need on a long race... this is bs that's sux that they have to ruin such a great individual sport

Yep. I did my first MTB race last year. It was fun. I can't imagine having someone run me out a backup bike if I have an equipment failure. Just seems wrong to me.

I guess bike exchange will still be against the rules. No DH bike handed to you at the top of the climb, etc. Still this rule change is not in the spirit of mountain bike in my opinion.

Wow...people complain about xc races and move to 24 hours etc...why because xc races generally blow. They have become a way for roadies to make easy money and or cross train. Now they really want to make it like road racing. I have no respect for the governing bodies of your xc races.

i'd have to agree with the general feel in this thread - i kinda see your road racing as nascar-esque (or any other car race on a track) and mtb'ing as more like WRC. being such, racers should fix their own damn bike if something breaks halfway.

The new rule totally kills the privateer era. Thats what I loved about this sport it's who had the most skill and endurance. Now you can make up for either with a whole lot of money...

I think it sux. Keep it the way it was. And sorry Canadians, Roland Green SHOULD have been penalized for the infraction when his cleat came loose and someone (Ryder - his good friend) threw him a mini-tool.
