Classic & Vintage - Nishiki Modulus?

I found a Nishiki for sale locally, and am going to buy it tonight...but can anyone tell me anything about it? The guy says it's from about '87, with a 33" standover height. From the photos I can find, at least the later ones came with 700X25c tires originally, and mostly Shimano parts, including a 52/42 Biopace crankset. Would those have been around in '87? What did I get myself into?

I rode one for a short while. Decent, mid-level ride. Not especially exciting, but I don't think it made me any slower than I already am.

Yep, far better than the search tool here. And you can use it for craigslist too, so you can buy bikes you don't need that are far away!

I own one, was my wifes bike back in the early 90s. The one I have is kind of a Mint Green with Pink and White accents. Nice bike, has a 4130 co-mo triple butted frame and fork and Shimano Exage Index shifters. Not much in the way of tire clearance though.

I'm OK with that. I'm starting to build a garage that is rather specialized.

So far, what I've come up with is this:

'54 Schwinn...racer?world?whatever? - bomber bike
'67 Phillips Sports - evening bike/city cruiser
'93 Univega Activa - "mountain" bike - 700X40/bullmoose bars
'90 Fuji Palisade - long distance, fendered, water-bottled, 27X28c bike
'87/88 Nishiki Modulus - quick, fun, fenderless, go fast as hell 700X23c bike
'74 Peugeot UO8 - Fixed gear

I'm thinking that's about it...

Went to pick it up...GHETTO! I wasn't holding much hope, given the look of the house. He pulled it out, and it was a rocket bomb - pink white and blue! But...he couldn't be seen riding a pink bike, so he spray painted all the pink a deep red. Really pretty fugly. Even fuglier? It oversprayed all over the crankset and front derailer. Fantastic. So, me and my good ol' buddy Ace-tone are going to be doing some heavy stripping.

Anyone have any better ideas about stripping this paint? I also need new tires. The ones on it are 700X20 and are starting to come apart in a really bad way (as in, I expect to hear a BLAM as I sit typing this). Should I go with the stock 25's, "standard" '23's, or go with what was on it and stick with the '20's? I've already got a bike with 28's, and was wanting this one to have narrower tires...is there any reason to go smaller than 22 or 23?

There's one on the local CL for an optimistic $300, possibly in a similar aqua/white/pink scheme. Looks like a fun bike, good luck with the stripping! I've had good luck removing spray paint with mineral spirits, it doesn't seem to affect well-cured professional paint jobs.

Yup - looks just like that! Or, it will... I kinda like it. Actually, i really like it. It certainly stands out!
