For some time I have been trying to post a photo of the Screaming Yellow Zonker for you all to enjoy. Now I'm pretty good with things that have chains and sprockets but not-so-good with electronics. I just had my daughter over to help me figure out how to post a picture. Guess what? The file is too big to transfer. My new medium price but not top line Nikon camera uses too many pixtels. My daughter tells me I have to re-size the picture before I can post it on BF. Unfortunately, my frustration window closed before we were able to figure it out.

The next step up the tech ladder is asking a grand daughter to help me. What do people do who don't have kids or grand kids?

I use this to change the size and other options.
It is free.

Learn to use Photoshop? Actually, most cameras nowadays will produce a file size that's much bigger than can be practically used on a forum like this.

Alternatively, many cameras will allow you to shoot at lower-than-maximum resolution. It may be easier for you (or maybe not--digital cameras typically have awful user controls) to take a downsized picture in the camera rather than fuss with software afterward. You might have to wade through the user manual to see how to do this, though.

Internet explorer and I use XP. Open up the pic from your directory and on the left hand side you will have an option of sending the "Chosen" file as an E-Mail.

Window comes up and I choose the "Show more options" Option. I then choose the Large option and click on it. An open E-Mail comes up showing your pic as an attachment

Open this up and with my set up it opens it in Microsoft Photo Editor.

Go to File---Save and I save with the name I want in the directory I want.

Job done except to delete the open E-Mail

The attachment started off as 1.36Mb and has finished up as 140kb.on the E-Mail and 91.6 within BF

Try uploading it at www.photobucket.com. They take pretty much any size photo, and resize it for posting on the net. Copy and paste the [IMG] link.

Or you can post process it with the Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Go to "Edit Pictures" and "Resize" or "Compress Pictures"

Or, your camera has a setting that allows you to change the resolution. I recommend leaving this on high so you get better pictures, but you could also change that too.

This is must-have software for photos imho.
Irfanview also makes it easy to crop your pictures so that only the part of the image you want to display is shown.

I just use pikasa (free software from google) to edit all my pictures. With that it's simple (you just click sync to web) and it automatically uploads all the pictures in a folder to your gmail account space. Once that's done, I just click the picture icon here when composing a post and copy and paste in the url of the uploaded picture. Cheaper than buying photoshop and doesn't require me to actually modify my pictures.

There are lots of ways to resize and change file-type of a photo without having to spend a lot on software. Even Paint (standard in Windows) can do it.

Why resize it? Just upload it to a free online photo hosting site, like photobucket (that's what I use), or flickr, or picasaweb. It's easy to upload the pics. Just make sure you make the pics "public" so everyone can see them.

What do people do who don't have kids or grand kids?

Some of us have a natural ability for computers, in my case more than my kids, though I am 65. Others, like my wife, are hopeless. She doesn't dare divorce me because she needs me to constantly fix her computer problems. On the other hand, she has skills that I don't. Everyone should marry their opposite, so you can compliment each others skills.

Since you probably married for love, rather than practical reasons, the suggestions by others are all good, and I hope one works for you. (My wife and I love each other too, despite being opposites in many ways. Too bad she doesn't like cycling, except to go to yard sales.)

I have a second, lower priced camera that I set up for taking pictures I want to email, or post online. I set it to 640x480 (VGA) and medium 'fineness'. Pictures are about 50-60kb size, with an occasional one in the 100kb range.

RG, there's a FREE micosoft program called picture resize. Download here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Pretty simple, price is right.

Picture Resize, as described above by Dellphinus, is just the ticket if you use a PC.

Lots of software choices can do that, but the camera itself may be able to save reduced size copies. I know that my Nikon S550 can. Check the manual.

DnvrFox

The thing is that picture resize alone may result in a very small picture to fit in the max limit of BFN With Irfanview.com, one can also change the saved compression ratio, which decreases slightly the image quality but gets it a whole lot less K, so one can fit a large picture still under the limit.

Thanks for all of the suggestions but I'm thinking that all of you are overlooking the spin-off benefits of asking a grand daughter to show me how to do it. I don't get that many 1 on 1 opportunities to bond with them. It would be a shame to pass one up.

No need to pass up such a great opportunity. Ask your granddaughters to help you learn to use one of the free photo processing software offerings.

Uploading to Photobucket or similar is a great way to store and share pictures, but it is very useful to be able to work with your photos so that they look just how you want them to look. The great thing about digital cameras is that you can take lots and lots of pictures and then pick out the ones you like without having to pay for developing them all.
I take a lot of pictures while on my bike. I don't always have time to frame my pictures just right, so I just point the camera towards my subject and take care of the fine details at the computer later. Irfanview lets me crop out the unwanted parts of the pictures. I often use the custom fine rotation feature to compensate for not holding the camera quite level. I can even do a little correction of the colors and brightness if needed.
None of this is as hard as it sounds. I bet your granddaughters can have you processing like a pro in no time.

My wife is my technical support. She's always interested in the latest gadget (For those of you who don't have an ipad - it is like magic). She took calculus in college as an elective to pump up her GPA.

OK, here's three versions of the same pic, a 4 meg original, all sized by Picture Resizer, as small, medium and large. Pic resize adds itself to the right click menu- select the file, right click, select pic resize, pick your size, done. It makes a copy of the file with (small) (medium) or (large) added to the filename. Will let you do custom sizes if you want, but has the three defaults for 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 desktop screens, and a 240x320 handheld. screen.

Small (53.7 KB):

Medium (78.4 KB):

Large (97.2 KB):

Holy crap...that worked...and again, I've learned something new. I hated the whole resizing deal, so for me Photobucket is the answer.

Thanks again from an old dog who likes to learn new tricks!

You can change the size of how it is rendered in Photobucket. Here is how:

Near the "upload images and videos" button, there is a more options link. Click on that and select the size you'd like.

Or, if you've already downloaded the picture and you'd like to make it smaller, just hit "edit" and "resize" on the drop down menu. You can always make pix smaller, but once made smaller, you can't make them larger.

Have fun.

(What do people do who don't have kids or grand kids?)

Unfortunately my grand daughter is only 2. So no help there. Daughters are too busy, so pretty much on my own. Although it was my reading the 55+ forum where I did learn to post pics here. And had to learn to resize, as large file photos take too long for me to upload with DSL service.

Thanks for the comments guys...Those skewers are these: http://www.bicyclebuys.com/bikeparts/Hubs/0509515PART

I crashed on a wet road back in May, and scrubbed the QR side of the original Spinergy rear skewer pretty badly. When I went to the LBS to get a replacement, I found these. They included front and rear and thus were about double the price as one Spinergy replacement, but they're half the weight. (55 grams per pair for the Spin Stix vs. 112 for the Spinergy pair) I'm not a weight weenie, but I did like the red skewers, so the reduced weight was a bonus!

Hey Jiffy...that's a nice red/black bike also!

And while we're learning some stuff, why did my picture post as a picture from Photobucket, while Jiffy's pic shows as a link to Photobucket? Anyone? Buehler?

Jiffyjam

I pasted the link you see, the pic is over 2 megs in size so it would not post here as a pic . Also I put in the Direct Link vs the IMG code. Someone wrote that the IMG code will let you post the pic directly.

BTW, these are Root River Trail pics.
Not sure which is better- if you link to photos on an external site, and something happens to them there, then the photos are gone from BF. If you upload to BF, then it's eating their BFs storage capacity ( I think). Personally, I like small photos that you click on for higher res versions.

RG: be glad to set you up with Pic Resize, Irfanview, whatever, or provide detailed instructions/phone support/whatever. I'm over your way quite a bit. Your call...

Looks to me like large and medium are the same size! Are my eyes going bad? :)

I upload to my own web site, where I control the pics and the web site. Learned the hard way when I used to upload to AOL and then they closed everything down!! Sometimes I upload to BFN, but on several "upgrades" they have lost a bunch of pictures.

The med and large are actually different sizes, don't know why BF displays them as the same size.
