General Cycling Discussion - A friend needs help finding the right bike.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi,
My friend wants to start biking again for recreational, fun, exercise, and wanting to be active reasons. He just recently bought a Roof Rack with the Bike attachment for his Acura Sedan. He's thinking of riding on bike trails, minimal dirt, mostly flat with a little bit of incline. This will be mainly recreational but might turn into an every now and then 5 mile commute to work.
He wants to know what brand bike to purchase. His budget is flexible but must be reasonable.
The bike has to safely be mountable on his Roof Rack. He's thinking of a Road bike or a Mountain Bike. I told him I'll ask around to see what types of bike he should look into. He lives in California Walnut/LA area, a good Local bike shop to check out would be helpful too. Any input would be greatly appreciated, and i'll relay the message to him.
Thx in advance

Why can't he do his own work? People who want things for themselves take the initiative to do their own research to see what works best for them, not their friends. Don't waste your time.

get a hardtail mountain bike and put slicks on it. tell him to go to a bike shop (the more the better) and test ride different bikes and get the one that feels best.

He's a good friend.
I'm just helping him out.

probably a hybrid would be the best choice of bike style for these purposes. Something like a Trek 7200. http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/bike_path/hybrid/7200/

If he has an Acura his budget must be REALLY flexible. ;)
Any bike (road, mtn, hybrid) will fit on the roof rack.

Best thing is to take him to a bike shop and go from there. Get rid of the roof rack unless he has a very tall garage.
