General Cycling Discussion - Tomorrow I will ride to work for the 1st time...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

it's funny how different my path of travel will be than when I drive to work...
I'm super comfortable with the roads around here but trying to figure out which way is the best to go is making me a little crazy! :twitchy:
If this goes well, I might try to make a weekly habit of it & commute every Friday (or at least once a week)
The route you take in your car is probably NOT the best route for the bike.
The folks in the Commuting forum can give you lots of ideas for selecting a route.

The best practice time would be early on a Sunday Morning.

which is pretty much exactly what I said in my first sentence...
I am riding to work more out of "need" than anything but it is something that I have been swearing I was going to do for weeks now. I go in late on Thurs/Fri so it works out okay, I have an extra hour to get there but if all goes well, I wont need it...

Let us know how it goes, I'm contemplating doing the same... been trying to talk myself into it.
Just hop on the bike and do it!

I'll definitely share my experience sometime later in the weekend. I know how much I like starting my Saturday/Sunday with a morning ride, I'm hoping for similar results tomorrow, just with more traffic.

+1
I started a new job a couple of months ago and I did practice runs on the bike a couple of weekends before starting to commute. You can take your time, and it gives you a chance to get familiar with any potholes or other hazards you might not see when driving a car.

Update as promised:
my commute was AWESOME! It took me 35-40 minutes to get from home to work including stop lights. Total distance was 8.96 miles. I was a little nervous about car traffic but didnt have any problems, the last 3-4 miles I pretty much had the road to myself. Only one little hangup but I was prepared, I hit a pot hole and it was enough to jar my bars down a little. I guess I didnt have the stem torqued enough. Pulled over, moved them back up and torqued the stem, I was back on the move in < a minute.
And the best part, I felt great for most of the work day, lots of energy. I am going to try to commute every Thursday & Friday, weather permitting. (I go in an hour later on Thurs & Fri)

I say just do it! Figure out your route & give yourself a little extra time the first day so you can figure out how much time you will need. I'm glad I jumped in with both feet.
