General Cycling Discussion - White Lightning

Anybody had any problem with White Lightning lubes? I bought a brand new bottle of WL Raceday last March and by June I noticed it had taken on the consistency of thin cottage cheese. I have always used the old formula but bought this "new/improved" on the advice of my shop guy. Anybody have any clues as to what happened? Using the squirt tip was out of the question...this bottle was never exposed to any temperature extremes so I'm kinda stumped.
I'm finally using up the last of it today (by gooping some on a shop towel) and was wondering if I should go back to the old formula if it's even still available.

That sounds pretty weird. I've been using WL for a while now, and nothing like this has never happened to any of mine. I would have taken it back for an exchange.

I assume you have shaken it up. It is possible that the fluid leaked out. I use WL exclusively, because it works well in a dry climate.

yup...tried everything. It was like it had congealed into little balls, and no amount of shaking helped. I did call my shop bud and he said it was a freaky thing to him too. It still seems to work ok, but it sure was a pain to apply in that condition.

I have had the same problem with WL Raceday. I always keep a small ball bearing in it, but the clumping still happens. Still prefer the White lube to grease based lubes, since it keeps the drive train reasonably clean.
My favorite lube- Pro Link- as recommended in my Klein manual. Seems Raceday lasted couple months before I noticed the clumping effect.

I have had that problem once. Sure does make it hard to use. The basic solvent for that is alcohol so you might try and thin it with that. Ordinary rubbing alcohol is cheap and easy to get.

I'm using some tri-flow stuff right now and it is great. It's not very messy and easy to clean. However, I want to try a lube that has wax in it. My buddy uses Ice Wax and his chain never looks dirty.

I've used WL for years and went back to the "traditional" thinner type after using a bottle of the Raceday. I was thicker and stayed better, but it gummed between the cogs more easily. It caused the chain to skip and I would have to use a screwdriver to dig out the space between the gears. Don't seem to have the problem as much with the regular stuff.

It does sound like you may have gotten a bad batch or it sat around in the shop to long and the liquid part evaporated and all that is left is the waxy material. Maybe check their website and contact them about it if your shop buddy can't do anything. For what that stuff costs you shouldn't have to just make do.
