Was in the market to purchase an indoor trainer for my bike this winter, but was wondering whether these things are able to be set up inside (Like say in front of the TV) without grease getting everywhere when it is in use. Do people put newspapers down in the "spray zone," and if so, how wide of an area do you paper. Or is using a trainer purely a garage thing (still cold in there). If anybody could set me straight on this that would be very helpful as my wife would kill me if I wreck the furnishings.
Thanks in advance,
Alex

I have my trainer set up in a nicely-furnished room, and this hasn't been a problem for me. Perhaps it'd be a good idea to put newspaper down under the drivetrain if you've just lubed your chain, but other than that I wouldn't worry about it.

I use my trainer indoors, in front of the TV, in a carpeted room, no problems. I'm also using White Lightning, a wax-based chain lube that sets up pretty dry, though I don't think any properly lubed chain would be a problem.

You may want to consider the garage anyway. With no wind to cool you, a workout on a trainer can generate a lot of heat. Indoors, I usually open a window, no matter how cold it is outside. I put a fan in the window and also run the ceiling fan.

Agree 100% with the point about the fan(s); train hard without ventilation and I'm told you can give yourself heat exhaustion.

The problem I had wasn't with the chain lube it was with little shreds of tyre tread getting blown off the turbo roller onto the floor, so I put a towel under the back wheel to protect the flooring.

I use a large beach towel under my CatEye Ciclosimulator. Plus the fans and an open window.

Hi,
clean your chain thoroughly, and use a dry lube. There are a ton out there. I used to use Ice Wax, now I like Pro Lube. Indoors I doubt it matters. I was told to get a plastic tarp, the kind with grommets. They last. You will want some sort of fan. I plan on setting it up this year so I can use training DVDs. Gonna get a small tv/dvd combo set.
