Should I grease the threads on my 1976 SunTour Winner cluster or not? I have noticed that the boxes for my newer Superbe Pro stuff all have "DO NOT GREASE THREADS" stamped on them in big, three inch letters. Does that apply to the older groupsets too?

Interesting. The box on my Winner Pro freewheel says "Do not lubricate with grease". They mean the freewheel bearings. As for threads, sure, no need to grease them if you are confident that you'll never ever have any need at all to remove the freewheel. Because it won't come off. In one piece that is.

+2 I use antiseize. But if I did not have antiseize, I would use grease.

Maybe it was a Japanese->English translation problem. Greasing (as opposed to oiling) the pawl-and-ratchet mechanism could cause the pawls to stick and not engage reliably especially in the cold, but I can't think of a reason why you would not put grease or anti-seize on the threads that engage the hub.

The only reason not to grease a threaded interface is that it changes the torque value readings for that fastener.
But in our case of a threaded hub...lube is prudent. Dissimilar metals here.
+1 the grease warning is for the pawls.
