Northern California - DUI pickup truck driver hits bicyclist and pedestrian in Danville this morning

Fortunately, no one was killed. The drunk driver was identified as Cainan Schierholtz, brother of San Francisco Giants outfielder Nate Schierholtz. Witnesses are asked to call the Danville police.

Witnesses told police that a red pickup truck driving south on Danville Boulevard first struck a bicyclist riding in the bike lane. Schierholtz did not stop and continued south on Danville Boulevard, where his truck struck a pedestrian who was standing in the bike lane, police said.

Looks like he was trying to make up for hitting the cyclist by clearing pedestrians out of the bike lane.

Sorry about the incorrect subject line. Initial witness reports said 2 bicyclists were hit. News photos showed 2 bicycles on the ground (one badly mangled). Later reports said that a father was riding single file behind his daughter. Only the father was hit. The daughter stopped to render aid. The father was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Boy, that is scary. The Danville ride is a regular route for many of us.

I drove by the scene of the bicycle collision yesterday several hours after the fact. I think every police car in Danville was still at there. I was wondering what happened.....now I know. Hundreds of cyclists pass by that location on a daily basis.

Ugh! Drunk driving should should carry jail time, even for first time offenders.

A couple of weeks ago a guy got caught robbing the 7/11 just down the road from there, in San Ramon. The clerk got out, and police units from San Ramon, Danville, Lafayette, and Contra Costa Sheriffs circled the wagons and bottled the would-be robber up. He came out but didn't drop the gun, so they killed him.

Gotta think twice about pulling that crap when the local cops don't have a lot of serious crime to be distracted by. They tend to show up quick, and make a day of it.

A bigger city would just have used the SWAT Team to take the guy out. Can't really run around waving a gun in front of the police and expect anything different.

I hope they throw the proverbial BOOK at that drunk driver!!! What a mess. Considering how drunk he must have been play 'pin-ball' for over a mile things could have turned out MUCH worse.

Latest news reports say he has prior DUI convictions. Maybe that is why one of the charges against him this time is driving without a license. I do hope they get him off the street permanently.

At age 24 to have multiple DUI convictions is just outrageous. He still won't do any serious time. Maybe at least he can get into court ordered rehab and stay sober....that's our only hope of keeping him off the road. Unless he kills someone they can't keep him in jail all that long I doubt. If a drunk wants to drive they will find a way.

Nice thing about living in a small town; I called in a petty theft ($10 worth of yard lights - wouldn't have called it in except that I had video and there'd been a rash of people having $300+ holiday displays trashed) last year, and the cop was on the porch when I got off the phone with dispatch. Call in a crime in progress, no matter how minor, and you're likely to have the first car there within two minutes, and 4-8 LEOs from 3-4 agencies on scene within 5 minutes.

Of course, when you'd like one to be sitting there watching the 18 wheeler blow a red light at 15 over the limit, they're nowhere to be found, but if you can give them some advance notice, they're pretty effective.
