Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Modern cars are designed with the heights and ground clearances they come from the factory with for a reason. I never, ever, ever mess with that. Have never, ever, ever been tempted to. Cars that are jacked up, or slammed low, give me a good indication of the mentality of the owner. Obesessed - and not in a way I'd convey as complimentary. :p

That Eclipse can survive another inch with stiff springs. ;)
My first Trans Am I lowered and it scraped....the TIRE. Chewed up the edges and burned the paint off of the inside lip of the wheel well. But this car is metal on metal.
Gives me the heebeegeebees.

So, if they can be lowered by using really stiff springs, how is the ride? Can't be that comfortable.

Never got the point of cars being that low. What is the point of driving when turning destroys everything.

I never understood the point with lowering a car that much... Anyone remember the mini-truck fad in the Bay Area back in the '90s?
Not a fan of lowered cars. Or raised cars....

Low riders are suppose to have auto-adjust pnuematic jacks in the front to jump over objects.
Refer to the vehicles in Cheech+Chongs "Up in Smoke."
Mine is no where near that low. It is dropped about 1 1/4" using Megan coilovers. Could go lower but it handles great just like it is.

I was wondering why the tires don't fit properly on the rim, but I guess spinners would make it look like that.

Yeah, I used to love trying to put those things on the alignment rack. This fad is mostly useless, super-stupid and is a really, really expensive way to make your mechanic hate you.

This car is in not drivable. is it just me or is the tire not mounted onto the wheel? if they're spinners they're cheapies as I've seen many spinners and none of them made the tire look like it was hanging off the wheel!

I imagine the engineers that spend decades perfecting their design skills, the marketing teams that spend aeons studying known road conditions and the expert mechanics that assemble and service the cars they build having a collective:

Sorry, but you and the aftermarket speed shop know jack about engineering.

It is most defenitely drivable and the tires are mounted. They've been stretched a lot, but it is drivable.
If you'd like to talk about "expert" mechanics, let's look at Dave Mann's GC8, which sits like this, or Rocket Rally, who built it. Anything you think you know about building a car, Rocket knows it better. I know people who drive cars like this daily, one of whom is a mechanical engineer and pushes 400+whp, and have no problems, and our current autocross regional champ runs stretched tires and a crazy drop.
All that being said, it usually is done only for looks but as long as you know what you're doing you don't sacrifice much either.

Yes, Cranky...you do know a tad about cars :).
The tires are mounted and something like that is driveable.

Used to drive something like that when I was younger and dumber. Then monthly overhauls of the suspension finally did me in after a year, now I enjoy in moderately lowered stock suspension - enjoyable comfort with adequate capacity for fast driving. Anyway, when comparing two cars, given the approximately same weight/power ratio, the faster car will be the one with the better driver. I've been racing myself quite a while ago, and I can tell you that many many hill climb setup cars with about 130 to 240 bhp had scraped the pavement with such low riders in everyday traffic. And none of them was so low. Going that low, you sacrifice suspension travel, and while you can make it stiff enough to be drivable without bottoming out, it will be too stiff for the given weight of the car and it's cog, causing too fast transfer of the car's weight while driving hard, making it effectively have less grip then stock setup. I've driven a few, and with those you will spend far more time scanning ahead for potholes, manhole covers, then you will be enjoying the ride. It's a show car, or just passable for a perfectly flat circuit racing. Otoh, I've never ridden tires outstretched, and will never do so. Seen too many explosion of tires mounted that way, some of which ended in a not so pretty accidents. There is a reason majority of tire manufacturers strongly recommend against that. But, it is your head, so you do as you please. Just a small waring that things can, and already had in some cases, gone wrong with tires mounted that way. As long as you are aware of the risks, it's your decision.

i agree cars that are driven on a daily basis need a lot of compromise between performance, comfort and economy

If you want to get into fast cars, then no, of course you wouldn't drop this low or stretch tires. I personally dislike the look of a stretched tire which is why I wouldn't do it in my car, but I don't consider it dangerous. Neither do any of the shops I've spoken to.

The damn tire is stretched. Every stretched fitment I have ever seen looks like that, it is NOT deflated.
