Bicycle Mechanics - Bike Tools

I have about every tool in the shop that is possible, except bike tools. Nothing is broken right now, but...I will need to make adjustments sooner or later. What tools would start with for $50, then $100, and finally $200? I guess I am looking for "most use for the buck" kind of suggestions.

There isn't a quick answer.

It depends on

1) Types of bikes you're going to be wrenching on: Cruisers? Crappy commuter bikes? Mountain bikes? High end road bikes? Tandems? Recumbents?
2) How much are you going to wrench? Enough to invest in shop quality tools or do you want to get by on garbage that rounds out after 10 uses?
3) Are you going to be doing the full service equivalent to a real bike shop? Wheel truing? Wheel building? Carbon parts?

For a basic toolset, you'll need minimum metric allen keys.

Nashbar has a basic tool set, and Performance sells 'Spin Doctor' tools, also in sets. Like operator says, you have to decide how much you are going to be 'wrenching', and what quality you need in tools. If you have deep pockets, Park has all the tools you could ever want, but you will pay for the priveledge of using them!

I would start off with a bottom bracket tool and a cassette tool that's fits your bicycle you have.And if you don't know how to work on it get a good how to book on bicycle repair.And then add what you need for each job you are going to do.Before long you will have a nice set of bicycle tools.And get some metric allen wrench.

$50=cable cutters, chain tool, spoke wrench
$100= cassette lock ring tool, chain whip, pedal wrench, cone wrenches
$200=specific tools for your specific bike, crank and bottom bracket tools, truing stand.

Evaluate the type of bikes you will be servicing, what type of servicing you will most likely be doing and by the tools for those type of jobs first. Also look to see what regular tools you have already that can be used for bike repair. If you are already stocked with tools in your garage, socket wrenches, small adjustable wrench, cable cutter, needle nose pliers, screw drivers and allen keys then you already have most of the basic tools.

My suggestion is to buy a multi tool for those times you're on the road and need a small adjustment if you haven't already done so.
