Recreational & Family - Walmart cruisers any good? -Also how about Trek Calipso?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I have a decent Trek hybrid bike for my longer rides, but am now also looking for a 7 speed retro looking fat-tired cruiser just to crawl around town with... ;)
I'm 70+ and still got me a soft spot in my heart for these old time looking bikes that were the mainstays of my boyhood days!

I saw a nice looking one in (gasp!) WalMart... Thing even had chrome steel fenders! Anyone have any experiences with these Wallywurld bikes? Sheeeesh, it was only $139, which ain't too hard to take..?

I'm also considering the Trek Calipso because it's a 7spd cruiser that's supposed to be fairly lightweight, but my local dealer wants $400+ for it, and that's making me a bit twitchy, y'know? :twitchy:

Thanks,

Can you fix your own bike? If so, buy the Walmart bike and enjoy busting your own knuckles.

Can't you put fenders and maybe a basket or rack on your Trek? It should get you around town better than one of those Wal Mart specials.

But if you have a itch for an old cruiser, why not get a vintage one and get it restored? It would probably outlast you and/or hold its value better than a cheapie.

Look into the Diamond Back cruisers. I got one last year for my daughter ($190) and it is a well built bike so far. Plan on removing tubes and sliming, I think we got a flat pushing it to the car.

You have service after the sale when you get bikes from a bike shop.

Hey,
What happened to all the posts from 8/3 to 8/10? I recognize this thread and have responded to it earlier. There were many posts during that time discussing department store/LBS bike quality and service.

OP made two threads with same topic:

Get an old "Chicago" Schwinn Cruiser off CL and restore it with help from the link above. :)
