Hello! I am completely new to posting here on Bike Forums, but have read many threads over the years to obtain some wonderful information. I'm not entirely certain if this is the best place to get an answer to my question, but I'm in the process of obtaining a Rivendell Sam Hillborne frame. My husband and I will be building the bicycle together (which I'm pretty excited about!), and while I anxiously wait for the frame to arrive, we've been purchasing various components and parts for the bicycle. I'm wondering if anyone out there knows what the maximum size is for fenders on this particular model? I'd hate to purchase something and then have them not fit.

Additionally, if anyone knows what the minimum difference in size for tires and fenders is, this would be very helpful as well. For example, could one have a 40mm tire and a 41mm fender, or is there more clearance needed?

Thanks in advance for assistance with this.

:) Yes, that would make the most sense. Unfortunately, after weeks of waiting for a response, I have yet to have them reply. Just thought perhaps someone out in bike land might know... but I appreciate the thought, certainly.

How sad that they could not answer a question like that for you. I can't read all of your post right now, because of the ad issue. But, their site says there is room for 40mm tires and fenders. The fenders usually run 10mm wider than the tires. So, you should be ok with 50mm, if that helps.

Thank you so much for your thoughts on the sizes. I did think it was sad, too, that I couldn't get an answer (at least of some sort). I did see on the website that the frame takes up to 40mm tires, but wasn't sure how much larger I would be able to go with the fenders, so I appreciate your feedback. :)

The fender size depends on the tire size you want, & not the maximum size possible.

The fender shoulld be approx 8 to 10 mm wider than the tire to have the correct proportion. For Example,
You want a 32 to 35 mm tire for your Sams, Get a 43 to 45 mm fender, not a 50 mm fender.
You want a 38 or 40 mm tire, get a 50 mm fender.

Hope this helps clear things up.
