Why is it that after my smart black trousers which i wear to work have been through the washing machine they always come out with white marks all over them and a generally faded look? Anyone else have experience of this or any ideas?

too much detergent? Idk, my mom always tells me to let the powdery detergent dissolve before I put the clothes in.

Use liquid detergent.
yup yup...solved my problem. In fact, for my black clothes I use the Woolite dark formula. It's a little more expensive but I have noticed a difference.
We have VERY hard water here. It does a simular "fading" effect on dark clothing.
When you wash dark pants, turn them inside out. They'll look better, longer.

Make sure you shift into the right gear before starting the washing machine.
