As I got off my bike this morning I noticed one of the welds on my rear rack had broken - It's the rear 'dog-leg' strut so its not really load bearing - more to hold the pack in place so I can probably wire it back as a temporary fix. However, I'm probably now going to be looking at a rear rack and would appreciate guidance. I know Blackburn are one of the big names, but I'm unfamiliar with the range, and haven't a clue as to whether the MTN or Expedition range would be better. I also seem to recall reading about tubus?

Needs to be strong, lightish if possible, not hideously expensive and fit a MTB with holes near the hub.

Thanks

Richard

Richard,
In my opinion we commuters need the strength of the Blackburn Expedition models. I have an ER-2. It's very much like the ER-1 except that it has 4 support struts instead of 3. Rated for 40 pounds. Tubus racks are the ultimate. One of the Tubus steel racks is rated for 100 pounds! A Blackburn ER-2 is a little over $50 US. The Tubus is pretty much double that. While the Tubus is well worth the price for serious heavy duty touring, the Blackburn is more than adequate for commuting. I'm sure there are other good racks by Delta and others, but I have been very happy with my Blackburn.

I have a Jannd rack. Forgot the model. But it is a good touring rack--very strong. I use mine for commuting because I have 26 inch wheels and needed the extra six inches of length to move my basket to behind where my heel passes. In addition to six more inches of length, it has three inches more width. I paid $50 for it. Made of aluminum, comes in black.

I've been using a Blackburn Expedition for over 17 years on my audax/tourer. I gave the rack to the frame builder so they got the braze ons exactly right.

It has carried well over it's rated weight at times and stoood up to my wife's bike running into the back of me a couple of times on tour (she should pay more attention):)

It's a 3 arm rack but even with my lightly loaded commuting pannier, I have seldom had any wheel/pannier meetings!
It's a cracker! (copyright Frank carson )

My Blackburn MTN rack seems to be going OK after 60,000km. Get one of those. And of course, don't waste money on seat-post mounted racks.

Thanks for the advice.

I went for the Blackburn Expedition 2. I like the rack, and it seems well constructed, but I'm not overly impressed with the fixings and extenders, but I suppose the proof of the pudding is in the eating. One thing I don't like at all is the reflector bracket - has anyone come up with a better solution than the supplied piece of bent metal? I can't get my cateye BS LED/reflector secured at all well. Can you buy brackets?
