General Cycling Discussion - The "White Garage Door"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Is it cheating to "borrow" someones garage door for bike posing pics?

I used the side of the smoke shack at work as a substitute for the obligatory WGD. I didn't get struck down by lightning, or anything like that.
I think the idea is to have a light colored background to showcase the beauty and detail of your bike.

Hmm, then i should go for the "epic scenery" background! haha
no motor?

Don't forget to get the crankarms lined up right either.
No one in my neighborhood has a WGD. In fact, no one has a garage. Everyone has a carport. That's why you never see my bikes in front of a WGD.

I thought that the point was to try to NOT take the pictures in front of the WGD. I like flowers.163612
Or something "urban" 163613

lovely bikes btw Mr.GrumpyThank you. I am no photographer, but the images of bicycles that I have enjoyed seeing the most spotlight the bike against a real or natural theme. I like those two sots particularly because the flowers remind me of an impressionists view of Provcnce behind my French bike, and a stark, industrial background to my English bike. To me, the settings fit the bikes in some way. Other photos I take tell a story of a ride I took or a place I explored. To me, the WGD shots are like illustrations in a catalog. You see the bike, sure, but you don/t see the bike, man. Dig it?

If you look at all the pictures I have posted through the years here there are only a couple with a white garage door... (my sisters).
I always aprpreciate interesting backgrounds to this.

If the paint keeps peeling off this wall it will soon be white... took this today as there aren't many general Stores left in these parts and I had to go and ride a bit to get to this one.

Am i missing something, or is your CAAD just kinda standing on its own in the 2nd picture?

A little bit of Photoshop can even get rid of my 6'2". :D
I was sitting around at home one day and thought, "Hey, if I take a shot of nothing, then one with me holding the bike, I'd be able to use the 'nothing' shot to wipe me out and leave the bike standing by itself. It's so simple, it just might work!" Fifteen minutes later, I had the pic you see there.

BRILLIANT! magical freestanding vs WGD bike pictures, i totally vote magical standing-on-their-own bicycles. Or outdoor, either way, the WGD seems like you have your bike trapped, like a show piece or something.
...now magical AND outdoor, i believe thats a breakthrough in bike posing.
BTW nice Nishiki, not overly simple or busy, a nice balance.

What made the Photoshop so easy was it was a controlled environment -- no passers-by, no random vehicles wandering into the shot. Doing it exactly right also means using something to hold up the camera. I've got a tripod, but just used a table in the lobby for that one.

I love to take the camera out on rides.

 I ride it on MTB trails, and figure it's a good idea to have some tools with me, just in case. I haven't needed them yet, but I figure that the one time I don't take them....
