I am new to bmx's, but was at the skate park the other day, and I was watching people on bmx's on the ramps. HOLY BALLS! I've got to do this. What size bike should a 5'11" 185lb guy get? What brands should I consider? What brands should I avoid? Any help would be appreciated!

Go to your local bike shop and see what brands they carry, then you can make a choice. there are alot of great bikes out there now and you should be able to find one that will last for around 400-500 new. I bought a lightly used Premium 4Carat for $300 and that is a $750 bike! A kid at the bike shop didnt like the skatepark and sold it to me. I am 6' and 180lbs and it had held up great, I did switch some of my old parts to the bike and the kid had upgraded some things as well but it has 36spoke wheels and a 28-10 gear ratio, 21" top tube and weighs around 26lbs so it works for me, my previous bike was around 35lbs and now it feels like I just float around the park!

things to try to avoid: hi-ten steel, unsealed anything, anything biggerthan 36/13 gear ratio
things to get: chromoly steel, sealed bearings, 36/13 or smaller gear ratio
iv heard good things about the dk helio, i rode a subrosa for a while it was solid. most bikes with chromo frames are solid
if you can afford chromo make sure it says 100% cromo frame, not main frame.
if you posted your budget i could give you better advice
