How do I find out what size bottom bracket I need to buy? I have a 2008 Bianchi Via Nirone 7 and I think it's time to replace the bottom bracket but I'm not sure which one I should buy.

Does it have an FSA crankset? If you want to keep the crank, look for an FSA MegaExo bottom bracket.
Bump for someone who knows about the Prowheel crank that's listed for the Tiagra bike (if that's what you've got).

It does have a FSA crankset. So, if I want to switch to a different brand of bottom bracket I need to switch to a new crank? I think it's time to talk to my bike shop and figure out what I want to do through them!

FSA bottom brackets are readily available for -50ish. There's no sense spending $300+ on a completely new crankset and bb. Also, you cannot use other manfucturers BB's on an FSA crankset. Some people have had success using a shimano external BB (assuming your crankset is even external) with the gossamers.
Otherwise stick with the FSA ones.

I've got about 4k miles on the bb and it's been making some creaking noises. I've done some searching that seems to indicate that the FSA bottom brackets are pretty low quality so I thought I would install a better brand. Knowing that they aren't universal maybe I'll try another FSA bb as I don't want to buy another crank. I'll talk to my mechanic and see what he suggests.

I've got about 4k miles on the bb and it's been making some creaking noises. .
The "fix" could be as simple as removing the cups, greasing them thoroughly and reinstalling them to the proper torque setting. If your bb doesn't have play or looseness, that could be the problem. 4k is pretty low miles even for a mediocre bottom bracket.

That's great to hear, I'll look into it. What is the average life of a bottom bracket?

the life of a BB? anywhere from 10 miles to 10k. the noise could be lots of things and if you are not handy around bikes I would certainly ask your shop to check it out. do you have 4k on the same chain? that could be causing some noises.
I have a '00 Bianchi with Record and I would be hard pressed to say it has over 2k on it and the BB is kaput! these new sealed units are sometimes (like everything) hit or miss. most BB likes yours might go 10k but if there was a bad ball in the batch yours came from you may have been lucky to get 4k on it.
