Bicycle Mechanics - Exceeding FD capacity: 48 40 24: Can I do it?

My front derailleur capacity is 22. My very unique cycling needs call for a 48-40-24 setup.

What bad things might or will happen as a result of me installing a 24t ring?

Probably nothing, they are usually conservative with those numbers. Your only exceeding by 2 teeth.

I just mounted the 24t ring. Without any adjustment other than the limit screw and barrel adjuster on my FD, it works fine. I didn't think the old Suntour Cyclone FD was up to the job but it is. Funny, it has longer cage than my Deore XT I was going to use.

BTW, here are my "unique cycling needs" I was referring to - I ride mostly in flats. I mean real flats. I'd ride my fixed gear everywhere if it weren't for the winds we get. So I want really tight gearing in the mid to upper range. But the hills nearby are fairly impressive - some even call them "mountains." And because I mostly ride in the flats, when I do ride in these hills, I need a pretty serious granny gear because I mostly ride in the flats.

I've got 2 <C> race triples 50, 40, 24, was shipped with a 30. they're fine.
and a 3rd with a 52,42, 26..
FD is a <C> Triomphe leisure , a bit taller back plate , or 80s Campag MTB stuff..
touring bike has a 50,38, 24 that i fitted steel chainrings on ,
without modern shift pins on the outer rings, It still worked OK ..

A 110 - 58 crankset on another bike has a 48,36,22 set, OK also..
a deore FD for 48T chainrings on it.

Use friction Bar end shifters , no indexing on any of my derailleur bikes..

I am in Stockton, so I know what you mean about flat. I do like to ride up the coast from Santa Cruz, and Mt Diablo, so I need some low gears. I just put a 22/35/48 11-34 9spd on my touring bike for loaded trailer hauling.:p
