I'm trying to bring a 70s era Schwinn Continental back to life - so far I've sprung for new tires, new rear wheel, trued the front wheel, adjusted the brakes, given it a bath and cleaned/lubed the drive train. It weighs a ton but it goes like a train once you're rolling... unfortunately in the top gear the chain skips with even moderate pedal pressure.

So here's the question - what do I do next? It doesn't make sense to put too much money into this bike, but I would like it to work! FYI it's a 14 - 28 5 speed freewheel.

No, possibly the original chain. Might start by replacing that, huh?

Assess the chain for wear. Look for roller wear and measure 12" worth of chain. If it's seriously worn you're probably looking at replacing chain and cogs. 5 speed chains are $10. 5 speed cogsets are $15.

Who cares.

You probably have worn teeth on that small cog. Although it is possible to just replace that cog, it usually makes sense to replace the whole freewheel. Here's a 6-cog one that would probably work (might need to add a spacer if it rubs against the frame):
