Just wondering what the deal is with these things? You know, the clear tubes with the orange ball inside it that moves when you shift gears. Do these things actually work? I could see them being a cheap alternative to something like the Flight Deck (minus the cadence option) if you also bought an inexpensive computer.

Went to the trek website.....didnt find a trek "5900"......they dont even make a 5900 or ever made one unless your talking about the USPS team road bike.

Sounds like you are talking about optical gear display. I have them on my MTB shifters, but have no use for them, I never need to know what gears I'm in. I am either working to hard and not going fast enough for it, in which case I need to shift to an easier gear. Or I'm not working hard enough, so I need a harder gear.

The Trek USPS Team Superlight is listed as "5900 USPS Team Superlight" in the 2002 Trek catalog. And it does indeed say "5900" on Trek's site as well.

Yeah I was just at trekbikes.com and it said 5900. Trek has three OCLV modles. The 5200, the 5500, and the 5900.

Congratulations! You have just discovered something even more useless than front derailleur indexing.
