General Cycling Discussion - new helmet

I am in the process of getting back on the bike more often and spent some time now looking for a new helmet, something that's also a bit more stylish than what I already have.

I am considering a Giro Saros in white/silver. Seems to be a good helmet with decent design and not too pricey.

At the risk that there are probably threads on this subject posted already, I am curious what fellowcyclists have to comment.

All helmets have to meet the same standards, safety is not an issue. The major difference with price is both comfort and style. Buy the helmet that you want.

edit. The Saros is a great helmet.

I always had Giro helmets -- until last summer. Found something better. I bought a Lazer O2 helmet. I like the style and the fit. The RollSys locking system is what really sold me. Much better than the locking mechanism on other helmet brands.

Get what fits. If you go cheap and get one that's uncomfortable, you'll be left saying, "Well, it was cheap, but I hate it." Or, if you pay a lot and that one is uncomfortable, you'll say, "I can't believe I spent so much on this piece of crap."

The helmet I use all the time is about as comfy as a baseball cap.

Giro makes a great helmet, if you like it, go for it. otherwise, listen to supernoid and barrackssi, they gave great advice.

I'm not gonna say. It's like shoes -- what works for one person may not work for someone else. When I read through most of these helmet threads, I always see recommendations for models that I've tried before. Some fit well, and some I couldn't stand.

I have a Bell cheapo that makes my head look like a mushroom. After I bought a new road bike, I wanted a more stylish one so I tried on a few $70 - $130 helmets at the LBS and they all made my head look like a giant mushroom. So I stuck with the Bell.

I ordered a Bell Variant, '07 model from Eastern Mountain. It had the right color and size, also was on sale for $30 plus shipping. Nice folks, as it sounded over the phone.

It's more of a MTB helmet, which is fine. I am more of a cross rider anyways. I like the visor. It should do the trick.

I think Bells are fine. I never had a problem with the one I have. Good fit. Strap work fine, etc.

Regardless of the "same standard" business, what defines a (slightly?) better quality helmet is 'in-mold' construction. Even these can be had for a decent price at Wally World. $28-50 will get you an in-molded helmet, and some actually are acceptable.
