Bicycle Mechanics - quilll extender

i want to raise my flat bars on my mtn bike. 1-1/8" quill. easy to find quill extenders. i also have internal brake cable routing on the stem so using the extender allows me to easily lengthen the cable and retain original brakes. don't want to swap out a sidepull brake caliper. and don't feel like getting high rise bars which forces me to swap thumb shifters/grips to new bar. i have seen quills for $10 online. local shops don't seem to have any extenders in stock. paved trails only. no jumping or heavy pounding for me so extender should work fine.

Is there a question in there somewhere?

well if you can find a quill extender online for $10 then buy it. most shops stopped stocking things like that as most bikes today have threadless forks and nolonger use a quill stem.

maybe my question is how do i raise my handle bars for the lowest $? my quill/stem is 1 piece with internal brake cable routing. a quill extender gives me the extra height i want. i would like to shorten the stem length also but that means a different stem. my setup now is 110x110.

You should be able to find a taller, shorter-reach quill stem in the used parts bins of any LBS. There's always eBay. You may need to get a brake cable stop ring to put below the headset nut, if you can't find a stem with brake cable routing.

If I understand you correctly, you could use what's called a quill stem raiser. Something like this. http://harriscyclery.net/product/various-manufacturers-stem-raiser-for-traditional-1-inch-quill-stems-1884.htm

Your quill stem will fit into the bulged top section of the riser. You should try this first before getting another stem though, as rising the stem this much will also shorten the reach you need considerably.

The OP wants to shorten her/his reach anyway. The weight of that riser with an existing stem would just about equal the weight of an adjustable stem, which could be had for less than that riser plus shipping. And as said, a longer stem in a used parts bin would be cheaper than either one.

The one thing that a riser with the existing stem offers is the brake cable routing, if the OP can't find a taller stem with one.

found 1 at a local shop for $15. yes i need to recable also. i think my RD cable is currently sticking since my shifts are funky. could be RD adjustment also so this will give me a chance to check that out.

Consider a quill to threadless adapter on top of that tube extender,
[ Which can be ordered thru any LBS, (not just Harris in Mass)
as most if not all distributors that supply bikeshops will have one in their inventory].

and then a currently more common threadless stem can be fitted
onto the top of the Q>TL . reach-length is quick to change
as current threadless stems have removable faceplates
so bars come right out , to swap stems..

brake passes thru current stem, so a cable hanger needs to be purchased to attach to the quill riser,
QBP makes one , also available in most LBS.

put on the extender today. new cables for RD. shifts better/smoother. and the ride is much more to my liking. a bit more upright which was my goal.
