Hi gang, it's good to be here. Long time since I've thrown a leg over me trusty old girl. I must admit to riding a motorcycle in the meantime, I know, blasphemy, tantamount to cheating.
I bought her new in Anchorage, AK on June 9, 1978. Yeah, that's right, I'm whatcha call an old fart, but I still got a few good miles in me.
So, she's been hanging under the house, neglected for years (I won't say how many), and she's in pretty sorry shape. I'll post images later. I have the original receipt here in front of me so I can give you an idea of what she was like in her hey day.
Touring geometry, Reynolds 531 double butted steel, 56cm, Serial Number: CO639, Campagnolo Nuovo Record Groupo, Phil Wood hubs and BB, Regina chain, Suntour Winner cassette, 1" wide Super Champion rims, Cinelli bars, stem, saddle and seat post.
I'll be stripping her down and going through her completely. The spokes are toast, one is actually rusted all the way through. The cables and housings are toast as well. I'll probably be getting a new chain but I'm going to try to dissolve the rust on this one just to see if I can make it work. The chain rings are still nicely shaped so I'd like to keep the old chain for that reason too as I know it's not a great idea to put a new chain on old teeth.
I would appreciate any tips or words of advice or links to pertinent information ya'll would care to share with me regarding restoring a rusty piece of exquisite bicycle craftsmanship.
