My LX rear wheel is about shot. I have an old XTR rear wheel-the hub is skinnier in the middle than newer hubs, making me think it has to be pretty old. Anyway, it's been used as a single speed wheel since I bought it. Is there a way to know if I could use it with my 9 speed cassette?

Pretty much everything high end after the mid nineties is 8 through 10 speed compatible.

I did not know that. Of course, this means my conversion to disc brakes may be postponed, which in this economy isn't a bad thing.

Through some internet research I found that the hub is a 900 series. Does that make a difference. Looks like it was the first one they made.

XTR 900 was 8 speed, which is the same width as 9 speed, which is the same as 10 speed......it'll work just fine. Sweet hub btw.

Yah, you betcha. The first series M900 XTR stuff was great. Slick, polished, beautifully anodized everything. Elegant, low-Q, 110/74mm bolt pattern cranks. Cantilever brakes, 8-speed shifters integrated with the brake levers. (I have a set of those I'm not using- I'll probably Ebay them this winter.)

Switched the cassette over tonight. I actually need to put a little spacer behind it as there is just a little wiggle.

Saves me money that I don't have to buy new wheels and the brakes work much better. My old rims were in worse shape than I thought. Totally baked, even after sanding.
