General Cycling Discussion - How/where do you store your U-Lock when riding?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I keep mine in my messenger bag, but I'm always concerned that it'll crush things like my groceries and a lot of times it digs into my back if I'm packing a bunch of stuff. I've tried locking it between my strap and cross-strap on my chest but that ends up being a hassle when getting it out and locking up quickly if I'm in a bind. I've also tried shoving it between my belt above my back pockets but that requires me to adjust my belt before and after I lock up. I may just keep storing on my strap/cross-strap so I can keep that weight on my chest rather than my bike or my back.
Where do you store your U-Lock(s) when you ride?

I lock it on the rack to which I had locked my bike. I have a little cable lock on the bike for on-route emergency stops. I have another lock at home. 4 keys are a lot lighter than 1 u-lock.

In Big Carradice saddle bag. or
in the Pauls Flatbed, [rear mount plate has extra holes , a P clip gives me a place to run the lock thru it, to keep it from falling out].

I typically keep it on my frame mount.

I mount mine to the stem.

I just recently bought a Kryptonite New York Mini U-lock (it was $40 on amazon!) and have been trying to manage a way to mount it to my frame instead of putting it in my drawstring backpack. I still haven't found a way, but while searching I found this picture and was curious if anybody knew about this mount considering I've got that very lock !

Otherwise, to those that may have frame mounted NY minis, how do you do it?

Looks like a pretty cool mount in the pic above.
I am considering to buy an OnGuard Mini 5015TC w/ cable and plan on hauling it in my back/hydration pack.
It weighs in at about 2 lbs, which seems ok for such transport and enough for the brief daytime stops I am doing.
None of my bikes stays out for an entire day or even a whole night.
Mini U-locks fit in the back pocket of a pair of jeans. That's what I do.

I've got a little front rack on my bike, and I just interlaced a bungee cord through it with the u-lock on top. Holds it nice and firm.

This worked for me when I used to have to leave an expensive bike in theft-prone areas. A couple of years ago I bought a Trek frame from a thrift shop for 10 bucks and built it up mostly with stuff I had around. It looks like crap, and it's a 65cm, so a thief would have to be 6 feet or so even to ride it, but it works great. I lock it with a cheap cable lock, and if it drifts off, I'd only be out $125 or so.

I came up with this:
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?669530-Fancy-carbon-frame-Aero-seatpost-Don-t-want-the-lock-in-your-pants-Had-an-idea.
Like I said in the thread, it won't work if you can't wiggle the lock through your saddle. I don't think my legs were hitting it at all, either.

Apparently not many people like to use the mounting bracket (usually included with the lock) to attach the lock to the frame.

Typically they snap off... at least all mine did.
I use an elastic velcro strap to the top of the rack sometimes, toss it in a pannier the others. The point is not to get too elaborate because you'll always be taking it off and putting it on.

Tubus Locc rear rack is made to clip a particular Abus U lock inside of its left side both , both exported German products
in the US they have separate distribution companies.

I have, but not that often, and usually on the seatpost instead of the frame. The best spot I've placed a bracket was on the seatpost angled back as if the U-lock was bring blown rearward by the wind.

On my commuter, bungied to my rack. While riding one of my mtb's and I need to lock it up, strapped to my camelbak.

This is what I came up with for carrying mine:

The bungies are flexible enough that if I want to carry a larger water bottle it's no problem.

Too much work tying all those cords... creative though.
I also have a cable with mine, a 9' beast that I keep on the bike for the days I have all the kids with me. So I loop the cable into a manageable size, slide it on the handlebar, and put the U-lock over the stem, so it catches the cable (makes the cable look a little like a looped-up extension cord). Since my bike already weighs 35 lbs., I'm not concerned about the 3-4 lb. or so of that little bit o' nuttin'.

Takes me about 20 seconds to undo or redo; the ball bungees are very simple, but certainly it's whatever works for you.

Unfortunately, Im too short to use my mounting bracket, at least at the point where I want to mount it. However, that stem mount is genius. The only bad thing is I have an adjustable stem. Once I replace it, I will try that.

Yeah, I have that rack. That mount is wasted space and weight if you don't have that lock. Wouldn't that throw the bike off-baane in any event?
I usually keep my lock in a pannier or in my trunk rack. If the ride is short, I just wear it (along with a cable).
I lock it on the rack to which I had locked my bike.+1
